While reading up on breeding.. I see that some puppies are stillborn... or dies few days later... I never dealt with dead puppies before... when my sulcata tortoise died.. while I was gone.. I was in denial and kept it sunbathing, keeping him warm for couple days... Until I finally realized that he was indeed dead.. and had my boyfriend bury it in backyard for me.. Now I live in apartments... In the future, if I do have puppies later and some are stillborn.. or dies.. What am I supposed do with them? Sorry for a weird/depressing question... |
I guess if it were me, I'd either bury them or cremate them...? |
Oh my goodness - such a sad post.... When we had a litter of kittens (many years ago), one was still-born - and we buried her under the tree at the end of our garden - I still can't stand the thought of moving house and 'leaving her there', alone :( When Rosie our Labrador died (at home) - we took her to the pet cemetery and had her cremated. I wanted to keep her ashes in the corner of our bedroom that she used to sleep....but, after a few weeks, I realised that I couldn't take my eyes off 'that box'...:( So we took her ashes to one of our beautiful parks that she loved to run in - and scattered her ashes underneath the weeping willow tree, next to 'her' lake - her most favourite spot in the world. |
Hi, and welcome. I hope it never happens to you, but it is true they are sometimes stillborn or don't make it. I have experienced both...I am not a breeder, though. It was very sad for me. I always thought I missed something...could/should have done more. Our little birth angels were buried, but again...it was very sad for me and still is as sad as losing ones I spent more of my life with. I loved them all...<sob>. It is something you can think about. Things will change sometimes. I could bury them because I had space. But I know a lot of people don't or prefer to cremate them and keep them nearby. I keep them in my heart and soul. Good luck. @wylie's mom i was thinking if that were to happen, i'd bury or cremate them too, but i was just wondering since i don't think i can bury them in apt's yard... :/ @harrysmum i'm sorry to start a sad post.. i got curious while researching and started to wonder what-ifs... when i moved away after burying my tortoise.. i felt so bad... my dad wanted to dig up his burial site to carry the shell with us but my mom stopped him since she felt bad about distrubing his peace.. and honestly i don't know what i would have done if i kept seeing his shell lying aroud too.. it'd have been even more depressing.. :/ your story about your cat and rosie is so sad :/ i hope they are happy where they are.. :) @navillusc when my tortoise died.. i thought the same thing... that i "could/should have done more"... i think i went into depression for couple months... i'm sorry to start this post.. i shouldn't have.. i feel like i'm making everyone depressed.. |
I do not know if you already breed or are thinking about breeding in the future, but I think it is intelligent to 'think' about options under every scenario you can imagine and do so before they occur. Your eventual actions may/will change over time anyway. When my turtle died in childhood, there was no cremation option. We put him in a paper bag and someone stole the bag off the back porch while we were preparing to bury him, so there is always something you didn't consider, too. It is a sad subject, but something we all face, and may have faced before, and with different answers. From my perspective, no apology is needed. Again, if you do breed, I hope you never need the answer to your question! :) |
I used to breed and show cats. I had a Vet tell me were there is live stock there is dead stock. That was her way of telling me to be ready for it and she was right it will happen, its the way life is. You can take any dead babys to the Vets and they can have them disposed of but that would cost. I dont mean to sound like it didnt bother my it did, it was hard to do and one of the reasons I stopped breading and showing as well as the politics of it all and there is alot of politics in the show ring. I just cringe when I hear so many people wanting to start breeding whether it dogs or cats. You have to have a boat load of money A thick skin and a want to improve the breed. Love is the easy part. We cremate - we live in a big city - well and we can't bury in our backyards. |
@navilusc i am considering breeding in the future.. maybe couple years from now, but i just wanted to learn one of the what-if's of breeding.. i like being through with things and i try to learn all that i can (even if i may forget most.. lol) but wow.. how can someone just steal a dead turtle.. that was really rude and inconsiderate... it must have been one of those retarded kids.. i'm sorry that happened to you. but.. yeah i felt bad posting this after reading other ppl's comments.. their story was really sad and i felt like i made them sad thinking about what happened before.. :/ @mybellababy mm i dont think you sounded like it didnt bother you. i mean i agree with what your vet said. its kind of fact of life.. even if its hard to accept that for me if something does go wrong later with my pets. but i didn't know that you can take them to the vets and let them take care of them.. and um.. you mentioned politics. what do you mean? @gemy, oh thanks for replying to this post too lol. but i guess if anything, cremating is the best option in the future.. |

My son has learning disabilities and he is the kindest, most gentle, most precious human God ever put on the face of the earth. He certainly keeps me grounded and his kind spirit and gentleness and love for EVERYONE, even those that mean nothing but harm or ridicule towards him, has certainly snapped my head and heart full circle......he has taught me tolerance where it is not found in others, and he sees only goodness and kindness in everyone, even those that mean to do him harm...THAT has been MY biggest challenge in life.....My son, on the other hand, sees only goodness and kindness and well intentions in everyone he meets.....this is a source of soul shattering worry for me, as I try to establish some form of protection for him when I am no longer around him to watch out for him. |

Morning all Yes you can take a pet that has passed at home to a Vet office and for a price they will send it to be cremated with other animals that have died. I have done it. Now politics it in everything that has a winner and more. Its at the office its at the schools in churches ....... So in the show ring its who knows that Judge and did she put hair colour on her cat and you take my cat up so the judge doesn't see whos cat it is . The judge don't like me. We don't like to think that people who are in charge are not alway fair put it happens more that we would like to admit. Then just between fellow breeders it can get so political. I have not shown dogs I would think its not much different. |
There is a saying when 3 or more humans are gathered together - there is politics. Politics the word the noun has become synonymous with a whole host of negative connotations. I muse how this has come to be. Is there politics in the show ring? Yes there is. All the time? No. More than a few times the best dog does win. In the ring this weekend - Dara won her breed then went onto group. It was a small show and therefor a small group was present. The judge was very fair - even though 1st to 4th placement was won by pro handlers 3 out of the 4 dogs I would have picked. the 4th placement was up for debate in my mind. And the judge did debate between Dara and the 4th placement as she re looked Dara and had her run again against the dog that eventually placed 4th. The show world is far from perfect - but it is what we have. As dog loving folks support your show breeders for without these breeders you would not have the beautifull purebreds you have today - and without support the future is very un-certain for the purebred dog. |

Deviruchi I accept your apology. I know that up hear in Canada we don't use that word anymore. My daughter studied in the US in the medical field. And the word retarded was still being used that was a few years ago now, It bothered her alot . We all make mistakes we apologize we accept we move on. |

@txviki yeah, my apologies, english is not my first language and i wasn't trying to refer it as someone with disabilities. @mybellababy i worked in brain injury unit and as well as other hospital units and we didn't really use that word to associate those with mental disabilities.. we just stated what disability the patient had, but never anything that had to do with the word *retard*. i've used it commonly with friends to joke around with in high school and in college.. didn't really think of that word as anything more than just *stupid*. but again, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to ruin anyone's morning with that. @gemy i'll try to avoid that word here.. i'm sorry again. |
Slightly off topic, but when you get back the cremated remains, don't you think there's too much of it? My vet charges more for individual cremations (you get back your dog's ashes). The cheaper group cremation you don't get back any ashes. When Scrappy passed, we had him cremated and I wanted to keep his ashes. He was about 4 lbs. I think there are too many ashes and too heavy. And don't ashes weight like nothing? I have a feeling it's not him in there. |
Breeding Just wondering what you meant by wanting him to experience being a father? He will not know what he is missing if he's never a father. The "father " experience is also short lived if you plan on selling the puppies. Was just curious. |
