Going Away for 3 weeks Hello, I'm just about to travel from Malta to London to be with my partner, unfortunately he is going to have a stem cell transplant. I've arranged to have a friend to pop into my house everyday to feed my five cats, however, she can't look after my Jake and I certainly don't want to leave him by himself all day and all night. Neither do I want to leave him in kennels. So I've arranged to leave him with a couple who I've met up with on several occasions. I don't know them too well but they've looked after dogs before and are looking forward and excited at the thought of having Jake. Jake has met them once, he licked their toes and seemed very comfortable with them but I'm so concerned that when I leave him with them on Sunday he will be very unhappy. This will be the first time that we will be parting. He seemed okay when my partner left to go to London. The couple are retired and will be with him for most of the day. I tried to arrange to take him with me but changed my mind as he would be alone most the time while I'm at the hospital. I will probably make a pet passport for him so that if we go abroad on holiday we will take him with us. I'm concerned about the Rabies shot - has anyone had any problems with it? It isn't obligatory here but it is required in other countries as you know. |
Oh my goodness - you've got a lot on your plate at the moment, haven't you - I'm sorry. Obviously, you need to be able to go away with a clear mind, in order to be supportive of your partner. I wonder if it might be possible for 'your couple' to be able to look after little Jake for one night before Sunday? Then at least Jake will know that 'mummy's coming back'! :) I'm really not sure of the rabies rules - but the UK's rabies free. I realise it's a bit late to organise a pet-passport (is it?) but there are some wonderful people that could look after Jake nearer to either Heathrow or Gatwick here - so at least you could visit him, should you ever have to come here again! :D I truly wish you luck - hope it all sorts itself out - and best wishes to your partner :) |
I hope all goes well for your partner, as well as with the dog sitting. :) |
Going Away for 3 Weeks Thank you Wylie's Mom and Harrysmum, it's very nice of you to reply and for your wishes. My partner is doing well so far, however, his transplant is due in the near future. Unfortunately I've left it a too late now to get Jake's passport and to leave him sleep over for a night with the couple. I've bought him new toys but will give him some old toys, his blanket and anything else to make him feel at home. After this episode, there is no way I'm going to leave him behind me again. Even my partner misses Jake, he has to see him almost everyday on Skype! I will let you know how things go. I will just have to hope for the best and stop worrying! Thanks again :aimeeyork |
:) All the very, very best - hope everything turns out perfectly for you all (I'm sure Jake will be spoilt rotten!) - and yes, please do keep us posted on how it goes...for you all! Big hugs from us all :) xx |

Even if he has a rough time, he will be so happy to see you! I watch dogs and they do great with me so I hope he does well and he will be happy when you get back. Maybe you can skype with him there? Just take care of your partner and he will be fine and thrilled when you get home. I hope everything goes well. |
Thank you for your messages. Today I prepared all his things (so many of them) and gave him a shower, or he gave me one! Tomorrow off he goes to his temporary home and early Monday I leave for London. It will be good to get off the tiny island and also to see my partner. JadeD I was happy to hear that dogs do great with you, it made me feel optimistic. Yes, certainly, we will be Skyping often while I'm away. |
Hello everyone, just thought I would send an update. With heavy heart I took Jake to his temporary home on Sunday. He was actually was very happy to see his 'new' parents. He sniffed all around their house and licked their faces and they just loved it. I just could not believe it, usually he barks at everyone! When I returned home, I must admit, I had a good cry because I missed him. Anyway, I have just Skyped with the people who are looking after him. They let me see him and he seemed fine. I was told that he was being taken on walks twice a day etc. What I was really surprised and happy to hear was that he hadn't lifted his leg once around their house! I was never able to fully house-train him. I'm hoping that he won't do it when he returns home. In the meantime, my partner has had his stem cell transplant which was very successful. There are another 9 or 10 weeks to go before he's allowed home but hopefully this is going to give him a good number of years in remission. Thanks again, it's so good not to worry about Jake while I'm away. |
I am so glad your partner is doing well! I am also happy that your dog is doing so well! Don't worry, he will so be thrilled to see you when you return. Be thankful he is having fun while he is there. The dogs I watch enjoy my company very much, but they are thrilled when their owners come home. |
