New Puppy Arrival We have a 6 year old female yorkie who grew up with a male poodle. We had to have our poodle put down at age 16 two months ago. We just got an 8 week old male poodle who likes to chase our yorkie around. It angers our yorkie and she starts growling, bares her teeth and snaps at the new puppy. It's been two days and our yorkie wants nothing to do with the new puppy and seems a little stressed out. Will this all change with our yorkie where she will accept the new puppy and how long will this take? I feel like a bad yorkie mom! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!:aimeeyork |
Hello and Welcome to YT! It may stop but it will take time. We were a single dog household 3 years ago with our resident bulldog then we added my first yorkie after researching for over 3 years on the breed:rolleyes:. I added two more pups this year within 2 months of each other. Sometimes they can be a bit snappy towards each other(it's usually my female pup causing the raucous lol). It will take your yorkie time to adjust to the new puppy and it will definitely take more than a few days in most cases. If you can, make sure your female has a puppy free zone. That way when she doesn't want to be bothered she can relax in peace. I also have appointed "lovey" time with each individual dog that's about 20 mins. They get brushed, treats, etc during their special time and the others are crated. |
Thanks for your help!! It's funny because when our yorkie was a pup, she dished it out to our older poodle and now she can't take it, since now a pup is chasing her around. |
That's the way puppies are. They love to play and are used to playing with their mom and any siblings. An older dog is not used to the young ones bothering them so of course they don't like it. In time it can change if you can introduce them to each other while you are with them both. Give your Yorkie a little more attention so she does not think you are forgetting her. Play with both of them together a little and love on them both together and as one said make sure the yorkie has a safe place to go to get away from the young squirt or put the new one in a pen for periods of time. It should all work out in time. Best wishes to you and your babies. |
Older dogs are afraid of puppies, puppies have a diff. smell, they are hyper wanting to jump in older dogs face. puppies nip. Anytime I bought home a new puppy my older ones would head for high grounds, the sofa lol, like other members have suggested, make sure your yorkie has a safe place to get away from the puppy and just chill. Your yorkie will accept the new kid but it will take time, maybe a couple of months. Always make your yorkie first, first to eat, first to get a treat, first one you greet, this helps keep the jealousy down and lets him know he is still # 1. |
Give it three weeks and you will see that they are best friends who do everything together. The older dog needs a bit to get used to sharing space with the new guy, but in the end they will bond into a pair of playmates! |
I really appreciate everyone's great suggestions! Glad to know that eventually they will become friends! |
