Sleep!
 

Last night was my second night with Georgia. Let me tell you a bit about her. She is 13 weeks old. At 10 weeks they found an inguinal hernia while she was with the breeder. The vet repaired it and they spayed her at the same time. At her check up, they noticed that through the gap it had pushed through. She was put under again and it was repaired; double stitched internally and externally.
Her activity is obviously restricted because of this. She is in a Richell expandable pet pen (2/3 is her bed/food/toys, the other part is her pee pee pad tray). Last night I put her to bed at 11 and I went at 11:20. She cried for well over an hour. She was up at 5:45 this morning. She wanted out, wasn't hungry. Is there any way to get her to stop barking and sleep? We've tried stop with our hand out during the day and just ignoring her. The pen is huge and there is no way that it will fit in my bedroom.
She doesn't want to be in there, I get that, but until at least her next check up we don't have a choice.
She is not in there 24/7. When Im in the kitchen I block my kitchen entrance way and she is with me then. If Im sitting, shes on my lap and when I go out shes in my vehicle with me in her booster seat.
I get that she wants to be with me but I need to get her on a routine and to sleep when we do. I also understand that shes in a strange environment and misses her parents.
Any advise is appreciated!

The only thing that seemed to work for us when they were still too little to sleep w/ us as puppies- was to fence off a smaller area in our bedroom, right near our bed, where a donut bed and pee pad could fit...that way they were near us, and didn't seem to need to cry. But the very *second* we'd wake up and make a noise, you can be sure that the puppy at the time wanted to be with us immediately! So, you have to be prepared to deal with that...

Great idea! Once she has her check up and is cleared I dont mind her sleeping with us.

For about a month I put my baby in his crate in my bed. Stuck my fingers in and he would lick a few times and we slept good.
Now that he is 6 months, guess what? He's right beside me. So sweet.

It will take time. She is in a brand new environment and does not know why. She is in pain and does not know why. And then to top it off, she is in an enclosed area when she would like to be out doing things and getting into trouble. Sorry to say that human sleep may be catch as you can for a week or so. But in the end, the lifetime of love and loyalty from this breed will be more than worth it.

Take a piece of clothing that you have worn and drape it across her cage when you put her to bed. With your smell it should give her some comfort and ease her stress.
I did this with Buddybear and it helped him as he was crated in another room. For some strange reason I'm having to do it again as he is not crated anymore but has his own patrician off area.

My little Gabby is 13 weeks old, and we went through the same thing for the first week that she came to live with us, she cried all night in her kennel. It was heartbreaking to listen to her whining, but I knew with time and patience, she would get through it, and eventually grow to love her "bed" and look at it as her "den". Now, several weeks down the road, she LOVES her bed and goes right to her kennel when I say "do you want to go get in your bed?" Sometimes she goes without me even saying anything. One thing I did that I think helped tremendously was every night when I put her in her kennel, I would give her a little treat such as a milk bone in her kennel so that she would associate "going to bed" with getting a "reward" and she actually gets excited when I mention going to bed, because now we have upgraded and purchased one of the puppy Kongs with a small amount of peanut butter and a few pieces of her kibble in it and she will lay in her bed and nibble on it and it kind of soothes her until she falls asleep and doesn't make a peep all night until in the morning. It does get better, it just takes a little time :)

When we brought Oscar home ,the first couple of nights he screamed bloody murder when I put him in his crate at bedtime . I put his travel crate right on my bed next to my pillow and he was find . I did this for about a week then transferred him to the floor and he was fine after that ..
