Fireworks I live in a town that has a huge fireworks display which I can watch off my deck no problem. So, the noise is pretty bad for Ruger. When things start Ruger usually goes under the bed and comes out when he's good and ready. He seems just fine when it all over, but I'm wondering if there's anything more I can do. I've taken him out on the deck and held him, but he just jumps out of my arms and goes under the bed again. Any ideas other than just let him be? He goes under the bed when it thunders, too. |
Have you bought the thunder shirt? My grandmas friends son said those work really well! Teddy barks and runs around when he hears fireworks or thunder and doesn't want to be touched so I just let him be and wait...on the holiday he will be with my grandma which makes me worried but I know they'll all be fine if we keep them indoors |

I wonder if you've let him see them from inside your house? With Harry, this is what we did... We wrapped him really snugly in a blanket - almost like swaddling a newborn baby, and cuddled him in our arms. And we watched from inside our house - going "ooooh + aaah" + clapping with joy with the fun of it all. Then we opened the window, gradually, so that he could hear the noise...bit by bit. Then we progressed to outside (probably inbetween Christmas + New Year! :D) - same wrapping and holding. If he struggled AT ALL, then we'd go in - and repeat. We've reached the point where Harry actually does his meerkat impersonation to SEE the fireworks out of the window - and rushes to our back door to join in the fun! :) I really wish you luck x |
I kinda wonder how much it really affects him. If I look under the bed he's not shaking and even wags his tail when he sees me, but he won't come out on his own. Some dog owners here actually take their dogs out of town and stay in a motel, but their stories sound like their dogs are going to shake themselves to death if they don't do this. One good thing is that I can go out and know Ruger will find refuge under the bed even if I'm not here. |
As tb98rock suggested, the Thunder shirt, I have also heard this helps some dogs, even a sung doggie T-shirt I have heard helps also. Cody is not scared of thunder or fire works but he does bark, he also barks if someone uses a nail gun lol. My now passed girls would pile up on me shaking and scared. Good luck on the 4th. |
Jackson is deathly terrified. Depends on how close they are though. When they are far enough in the distance, they don't seem to bother him. I can tell he hears them but he doesn't act *scared*. But anything sounding like a gun shot, firework, or thunder that is a loud BANG and up pretty close.... he will go to a corner, or under a bed, etc. He often shakes but it depends on the loudness honestly. Sometimes he just goes under the bed, sometimes he shakes real bad, sometimes he pants/paces. The vet prescribed him alprazolam (xanax) for another issue and I've found they don't do anything. He did horrible on an RV trip to Florida which was bouncy and loud on bumpy roads which is what made us get the RX. Didn't seem to help, like at all. I've heard xanax is hit or miss w/ dogs. So vet said she was gong to give me trazadone (I think) as she sees more success with it. But you could try something like Rescue Remedy first (didn't do anything for Jackson lol). |
If Ruger isn't 'freaked-out' and if he simply doesn't like the commotion, I'd let him be...I think it's ok for him not to like all the noise, etc., and for him to go to a comfortable place--again, as long as he isn't traumatized. Heck, I've experienced some situations that I wish I could have simply crawled under the bed 'til it was over!!!! Happy 4th! |
Melatonin is also recommended for thunderstorms, fear, 4th of July sounds...it may help. You would give a 3mg tablet....not extended release, just regular. |
