Small Pool for Yorkie We in Western Washington have had unusually high temperatures , 80 degrees + this spring, & summer. Of course I walk Sassy in early AM & evening. Most of the time she stays in the air conditioned room. My Yorkies in the past liked swimming. I was thinking of getting her a kiddie pool. I probably wouldn't get in, but of course I'd be right there. She has always LOVED being outside, & I can't let her out for more than a few minutes in this heat. Please, any thoughts or advice or a waste of time & $$. Thanks in advance for your speedy replys! ! ! |
I think it would be a fun idea. Let them get outside, get some exercise and have fun playing in the cool water. |
It'd be nice if you could "test" it out to see if she'd enjoy it... Some dogs are just terrified while others take to it like fish in water. How about filling the bathtub to see how she reacts if you don't know anyone (place) to check? |
I have seen pics and videos of yorkies in those little plastic pools having a blast. Some yorkies do not like water, but I think it would be worth it to see if yours does. I've seen those pools for $25 at local stores. But I definitely think you should get in there with her ! :D |
I got one at Walmart for $4 its real little in hard plastic. I'm in Texas and have a real pool, all 5 of my Yorkies hate water. I just got the little pool for bathing in summer time. |
We have a plastic kiddie pool. Bubba loves it. He lays down in there but Sissy just gets her feet wet and jumps back out. I fill it, pull up a lawn chair, put my feet in and lifeguard :p:):):) |
:D Well, big huge Harry hated his pool (I realise that many on YT LOVE them!)... But what he does really like is the water sprinkler - he runs in and out of it - I throw his ball through it and then eventually he just lays down in the cold bits round the edge.... Even in England it's 95 degrees during the day at the moment - the sprinkler's our absolute saviour! :) |
I bought a small kiddie pool for my two puppies. We have only had one hot enough day so far this summer to use it (21 of the 30 days in June it rained and gave us a total of over 10"). It did take them a bit to get used to it but after about 20 minutes, the puppies were jumping in and out of the pool and playing with the tubby toys I bought to put in there for them. |

$10. Walmart large size kiddie pool, put enough water in to cover the top of her paws, then throw is a couple of rubber squeak toys, then you go to kiddie pool, put your hands in the water and splash your hands in it, tease her with the toys, let her enter the pool on her own, even if she just jumps in then out, don't force her in, coax her, make it fun. Cody is adopted, I got him when he was 2 .5 y/o, last year I got him the kiddie pool not knowing if he would like it or not. My passed 4 girls LOVED the water, I had avery big pool for them, donated that and all dog things when my last girl had to leave me, boy can I kick myself now. I can't find another pool like the one I donated. So Cody got this little kiddie pool but the larger one. I put just a few inches in it, tossed in his fav. toys, then made a big fuss telling him to go get the chicken or go get Ducky, the water was VERY cold as I had just filled the pool, he jumped in, grabbed his Ducky and hoped out. I kept throwing the toy back in the pool, he kept jumping in, every time he would jump in the pool I made a big fuss, clapped my hands, told him he's a good boy, my neighbors must have thought I was a nut case, fussing over a dog and a kiddie pool lol, who cared lol. By mid summer I had the pool pretty filled, no prob. he would jump in dig, dig, dig at the water, snapping at the bubbles he was making with his digging lol, he had a blast. Now this summer I am again starting with just a few inches of water and will add more each day. I would give it a try, $10. if she won't use it donate it to your local shelter, they use kiddie pools for the dogs.....good luck. |
I have a baby pool for Sunni and my other dogs and they LOVE it when its hot out. I fill it about 2" or 3"s and throw toys into it. Sunni is obssessed with it. Of course that means she's got to be brushed a lot more, but its worth it. I use the water at the end of the day to water my plants:) waste not want not. I do use fresh water everytime its filled because they will drink it. Have fun!...Now when I get the hose out Sunni does a happy dance and tries to drink the water from the hose..lol. She's so goofy. |
I would think if they love bath, they would love the pool. Mine love rain, but they do not like baths or pools, even if I sit in with them. I am going to try the sprinkler idea. We have a huge yard and they love to be outside - chasing squirrels and birds. Mostly staring up into the trees watching for that movement :) And I love watching them, my favorite past-time. We had a special treat this spring, a mother squirrel nested in our bird house and had 4 babies. Now the 4 babies hang around and entertain me and the pups. |
