Help! Yorkie Puppy Getting The "Crazies" In The Evening Hi Everyone! We have new sweet little 13 week old yorkie girl named Gabby Claire, and I have a question about her behavior/potty training in the evenings. I have been crate training her since she came to live with us about a month ago, and she has been doing great for the past few weeks with going outside to potty with very few inside accidents. She seems to be catching on very quickly and will most of the time go to the back door to let us know she has to go outside to potty. However, for the past few evenings, she has become rather "cranked up" and has squatted and peed in the carpet a few times each night right infront of us!! Then, she tries to play hide and seek by running in and out from up under the couch when we try to pick her up to take her outside after the accident. During these episodes of "wild" behavior, she is rather hyper and won't listen to a thing we tell her, she is nipping at our feet and hands and growling and running around wildly, which I know is typical puppy behavior, but I just don't understand what happens to her at night, especially when she has been out of her kennel almost all day with us, except for nap time and she is usually fairly calm, and has done so good with going outside to potty all day, and then, it's like in the evenings she just loses her little mind, and has forgotten everything she has learned, such as going outside to potty! Has anyone else ever experienced this with their baby?? |
Many of us here have mentioned the yorkie "zoomies", where they just get all zoomy and bonkers for a small period of time. It could be something like this. All you can really do is roll with it for now. This puppy is really, really young...so she really doesn't put a lot of things together yet. |

Try increasing the number of potty breaks/outings around this time. Don't rely on her to tell you if she needs to go out. |
Sounds like typical puppy behavior. You will probably have to remind her several times about her potty training before she becomes consistent. She is still pretty young, and when she has the zoomies, she is definitely not going to remember where she is allowed to pee. When I was training Duchess to use potty pads, even when she was trained. I would still walk her to the potty pads and tell her to go potty....just as a reminder. Just hang in there it does get better. |
Boy do I know what you mean. Ruger is a wild man starting about 6:00 pm until bed around 9:30. After all day of taking him out, a lot, playing with him, watching every move he makes, I'm spent by6:00 pm. I get my 2nd or 3rd wind and as everyone has said " just roll with it" He's now almost 6 months old and he has gotten better. Don't get me wrong we still play a lot and go outside a lot during that time period. But he is calming down a bit and tells me when we need to go to bed. Wow! These little guys are one of a kind. 😴 |
It's pretty typical, until about 5 months Cookie would be great on potty training for a while and then have two days in a row where she'd go nuts and pee all over the place and right in front of me even though I'd be taking her outside 3-4 times an hour and directly after every nap, every meal, every play session, etc. |
Zoomies are the worst! Teddy does it around 9 every night brings me every toy and begs for ice and just runs for a whole hour before sitting down! He did the potty thing when we got him! He'd be fine going outside till night then he'd freak out and go behind the couch! Good luck with the new baby |
I don't know, I love when they do zoomies. Cookie is 2 years old now and still does zoomies around the house, especially with all these rainy days where she has been cooped up inside. |

Teek does this fairly often and will want to play and have a good time, he just isn't as wild as the puppies are. |
Now that my boys are 6 and almost 7, I love when they break into the zoomies too. :) Max is an Olympic zoomer after a bath. :D |

Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance that this is normal behavior! The running around doesn't bother me near as much as the peeing in the house during these episodes! I know she is still very young and it will take some time until she is completely potty trained...but she only does the "peeing in the house" thing in the evening when she gets in spaz mode...I am thankful to say she has NEVER pooped in the house thus far, so I'm at least very lucky in that aspect! :) I have been mommy to two other yorkie girls over the past 20 years and neither of them did the "zoomies", so I guess I have my hands full with this little girl! |

Sunni will be 8 months in a couple of days and she's a zoomer too!! Its always in the evening, right when I am totally out of steam, lol...She will bring me her toy of the day, and nudges my hand until I start to throw it for her, lol..luckily she's easily placated because I dont really do much...just hang on for a little tug of war, then toss it into the next room..she brings it back, repeat about 5000 times, until my arm wears out:) She is settling down in other ways though, and I have to admit I really miss some of her zany little puppy antics. What a treasure this little girl has become to me. |
If it makes you feel any better, Yorkie zoomies are cute. Try Collie puppy zoomies at night. Poor boy is going to destroy something. I hope he grows out of that before he's full grown. lol |
