getting him to stay with Grandma Dinky is our darling, or we are his darlings. He, like most dogs, hates being away from us. He does seem to like staying home some mornings when he wants to sleep in and we have errands. He heads to his crate when he sees us preparing to leave most mornings. On the other hand, if either of us is home alone with him, he spends most of the time pining, watching, not eating, not sleeping. We moved back to MI recently, and now we need to go back to NC and pack up the house there. It should take about 2 weeks. He loves my MIL. Mostly. Still, she brought up that she would watch him, but she is afraid he would not eat and just be too miserable if she took him. It would be soooo much easier to do this move if he were not traveling with us. I guess we need to leave him with her for a couple of hours at a time until he gets used to it. Any suggestions? |
I would leave him over night with her and see how he does. My oldest Yorkie, Teek will not eat if I am not home. I can just be gone all day and he is home with my family and he will not eat until I return home. For that reason I take him wherever I go on vacation because even with my husband and kids he will not eat without me being there. I would give it a 1 night try and see how he does with her. 2 weeks is a long time for him to be away, but better to be with someone he loves than stuck in a kennel where he isn't played with and loved on. Good luck and it is great that she loves the dog so much! |
JadeD has a good suggestion in leaving him a trial beforehand to see how it goes...good idea. I would be fretting about this too, bc 2 weeks is indeed a long time...but...I bet he'd be just fine in the end. Maybe make sure you leave something w/ him when he's at the MIL's house that smells like you guys? |
When I do take Teek on vacation with me, he mostly eats whatever I fix him. I try to make sure I have chicken and stuff to feed him as he will not eat his dog food while away either. He ends up eating whatever healthy stuff (healthy for him) that we are eating on the trip. The last trip he had some chicken and some asparagus and other stuff like that. I take his dog food but he never eats it. I have just accepted that when I travel with him that is what he will be eating for the trip and as soon as we get back home he is just fine with his dog food. I even take HIS dog bowls with us and everything. If you do leave him and she tells you he isn't eating I would have her feed him things like white rice and boiled chicken and possibly give him some nutri cal while you are gone to make sure he gets something. You can give her a list of safe foods for him in case he won't eat his dog food so he doesn't starve. I know all my dogs love oatmeal and will gobble it up. When I make oatmeal I make a big pot of it and when it is made I scoop a heaping scoop (wooden spoon) into 4 bowls (more in the last bowl for the big dog) and then let it cool. I then sweeten the rest of the pot for my family with brown sugar. Once the 4 bowls are cool then I let the dogs eat their oatmeal and they LOVE it. We don't have oatmeal too often so it is a really super treat for them. |
Yes, I think we need to try it out first. I think two weeks might also be too long for mother-in-law. DH and I are both sure that he would languish in a kennel. We just couldn't do it. I think we will try the overnight with grandma, but since we need 2 weeks for the move, we will just take him with us and accept the situation. |
I could not board my dog like that as well. 2 weeks in a kennel is way too long for these dogs that are so attached to us. If he does great overnight then he may do okay with her for 2 weeks, but if you can take him with you then that is good too. It would be nice to have her as someone who can watch him if you do need to leave down for a weekend or a few days though. We had a fox terrier growing up that did great staying with my grandmother when we went away for up to 10 days at a time. She fed him whatever she fixed for him to eat (people food) and we had to put him on a diet when we got home, but he loved to visit her and never fussed about us being gone. Fox Terriers though are not quite the same as Yorkshire Terriers though, believe me. LOL |
It's such a dilemma isn't it? Jackson is very attached to me as well and even though he loves my dad and loves being at his house -- my dad said he is very anxious when I'm not there, doesn't sleep as well or eat as well and spends a lot of time in the window looking for me. He does ok and I know he's safe there but I think I would be hesitant to leave him for 2 weeks unless I absolutely had to. I agree on a trial run just to see. |
