5 yrs old no gray Maggie is about 5 yrs old now, and still black and tan - no gray at all! People always assume she is still a puppy for this reason. Anyone else have a yorkie that hasn't turned gray yet? If I really look, there is the very faintest gray where the tan meets the black. Just curious! I know all pups are different, and I love her colors! |
Max is 6.5 years and has a dark saddle, reflects blue. I wonder if he will ever turn silver/grey. He went completely gold/blond on his head, except for 2 streaks at the lower corners of his mouth. |

It's possible that she's a "red legged" Yorkie, which has shorter, coarser hair and remains black and tan. Could you post a photo? |
Ziva is 6 and is still black altho she has a few white guard hairs that are visible when she gets a short cut, also the slight greying at the top of her legs. Abby at 4 is totally grey and silver from the sun/pool- I know it is fading because she has black roots! |

So intersting, love the feedback, maybe she will never gray, ok by me, she is a cutie just they way she is! |
Does she have a cotton coat? Those tend to stay darker. |
My Luci is 7 yrs old and has no grey what so ever. |

The YTCA site gives some examples of how texture can affect coloration here: The Yorkshire Terrier Grooming Tips- America Teddy is dark with a cotton coat but he's only a year and a half old so I think I'll have to wait another year and a half before guessing what his final color may be! |
Maddie is the Black and Tan one in my avatar will be 9 years old next month. No gray ;) |
The father and grandfather (they look identical) to my puppies are black saddled with a tan face. The dad is still young, but the grandfather is much older, I think 5 or 6. He still is black on his back. I think some are just colored that way. I am hoping my little boy puppy, Rowan will end up looking like his dad and grandfather. I think the girl puppy Raksha is going to look like her grandmother and be tan and silver, just like my older Yorkie looks as well. I had Teek at the house of the person who owns the grandma and we could barely tell which dog was whose. Same size, color and hair cut. It was funny! I do think that Raksha will end up looking like them. |

I do not think Maggie looks like a red-legged at all. There are many Yorkies who stay dark until really old age. As I wrote above, my Max has a very dark back. He has a silky coat that grows floor length. Show Yorkies have dark backs, steely blue that some mistake as black. I don't know how long they stay dark because most have their coats cut by a certain age. The only older champions who have kept their coats I have known turned dark silver. |
My Mollie is 11 1/2 and she has some silver highlights but, no gray. She was Black and Tan then when she had puppies at 2 years and then she got her silver highlights. |
I have had 4 yorkies, all now past, 2 stayed pure black on their back, one had auburn face and legs, the other had blondish red on face and legs. I LOVE the black backs, not very common colors. |
Callie has a blonde head with blonde legs and her body is black. Sometimes when her hair grows out a bit right before a grooming there are a few strands of blonde. Callie is 8. I think if she gets gray hair now it's from old age :D |

Hmm she kind of has similar coloring to my Kimchi, and she's a black & gold. She got fine sprigs of silver/blue around the edges of her black saddle (and silver/blue top of the head), but I don't expect her to ever go completely blue/silver on her saddle. I used to also have a black and tan girl in the past and she had more of that tan color instead of blonde and still had a black saddle all up until she past away at 12 yrs old. I have noticed she has some tan around her mouth and sometimes feet, but I come to realize it's most likely staining. I used a facial cleanser that helps remove stains some and noticed that those areas lightened up some. |
Gizmo is 2 yrs old and still Black and Tan. He also has a cotton coat. My new pup Maxwell is only 4 months old, super thin long shiny coat for his age and has already broken the steel blue on his head, and I'm positive he will be a silky coat. His hair is already about 3" long at only 4 months :-) |
Thanks for all the input and shared examples everyone! I don't think she is a red leg, I trim her legs. But a good suggestion! I have always gotten silky and cotton coats confused. Maggie 's fur grows slow and thick. And I never have to brusher her, I usually only do before plopping her into the bathtub. The black is coarse, and the tan is fine and so soft. But she never mattes, though I keep her in a puppy cut so that probably helps. As for the color debate, I am happy to have her stay gray free forever, she is cute as a button and will always be a baby to me :) Was just curious about other pups. Sounds like we have a good mix on this forum...they really do come in all colors and sizes! |
