Underarm matting We just got back from a trip. Penny wore her Buddy Belt (which I love btw). The only problem is, the hair under her arms is matting. It is really close there and tender. She hates the slicker brush. I was wondering if there was something I could do to loosen the mat enough to trim safely. I was considering rubbing with coconut oil and trying to work the mat with my fingers. She hates the groomer and gets so upset that I just don't want to put her through that either. My Mom had a tiny poodle who had a heart attack at the groomer's and died. This was years ago but I remember it well. Any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |
I have the same problem with Macy because she is a cotton coat and mats just by looking at her. I try to keep the underarms cut really short but when mats happen I try to put a comb between her skin under the arm and the mat and just cut it out. I have luck with a product called Cowboy Magic. I put a little on the matted hair and gradually work it out with my fingers a little each night. Good luck, that area is really tender. |
I would use a detangler. I have one for Teek to help get mats out of his hair. He came to me so matted that I had to trim several large chunks of his hair off. He gets brushed nearly every day so it is so much easier. I do use the detangler if I find a spot that needs some work and it does help to ease it out. I might even try just a drop of conditioner on your finger and rub it into the mat and see if that will help you to be able to work it out and then you can rinse that off with just a touch of water. |
Do you have a mustache comb / butter comb? If yes, use the end of it to sort of "pick" at and loosen the mat until you can see the separation btwn the mat and the skin. |
Are you using a slicker brush with tipped pins? For me, the easiest way is to put they laying on their back on my lap and cut out the mat with a blunt tip scissor with one hand while holding up their arm with the other. (Not sure if this makes sense) I put them on their back and give them belly rubs, massages, etc to get them to relax before I start the snipping. |
Teddy hated pin brushes too until I found one that had the tips coated with plastic. Also, I gave him a treat with each stroke. Now, he comes to me when I ask him, "Do you want to be pretty?", instead of running when he sees the brush..haha. That's good for me since he is cotton coated and a nightmare under the arms and everywhere else. Also, instead of scissors, I like to use finger nail clippers for mats. They have baby ones, for example, and I believe you can get plastic ones, too. Scissors for Teddy make me nervous but he's 4 lbs and nearly as small as the scissors...plus, I'm left handed. Not a good combination! |

My 8 month old has hated the slicker brush since I got him as a puppy so I don't use one. He gets mats quite often under his arm and on his legs, right up against the skin. I bought detangler to help get them out after I read that it would but to this day, I haven't had to use it. I use a flea comb and 'pick' the mats out with the very tip of the comb, piece by piece. It takes awhile but it doesn't hurt him (he has never cried and lies there quietly so I don't think it does) and I have been successful in getting all his mats out and he gets really matted running around and playing in the dirt, dried leaves and sticks. Good luck in getting them buggers out. |

Arm pits, inner thighs, underbelly are considered high rubbing areas & should be shaved or closely cut w/blunt nosed scissors. It's considered 'sanitary trims' in the grooming world. Those areas are very sensitive for them, so it's best to keep those fine hairs trimmed than working the tangle out. If it's a puppy, you especially do not want to associate grooming time as ouch time, so it's best to cut them off. Mimi is more comfy if I have her on her back, on my lap. I trim the fine hairs w/blunt tipped scissors. Momo, I place on my desk & trim his arm pit hairs w/blunt tipped scissors & trim the rest w/clippers. He has a lot of soft hair that grows very fast. |
I actually trim Emma's hair under her "pits", belly and sanitary area. It keeps the matting down since she's in full coat. |
