Swimming do your Yorkists get in with you? My Ted hated every second of our first attempt! |
Both of my German Shepherds were part duck and loved the water. I'm anxious to see if Piper likes to cool down with a swim and am thinking of borrowing neighbor's 'kiddie' pool so she can ummm...'test the waters' as it were...! I'm wondering how deep I should fill the pool if I go that route? Deep enough so she swims or just deep enough so she can wade? Any thoughts, ideas are very welcome! We'll be in triple digits within a few days! |
I've posted this video a lot on here but yes Jackson LOOOVESS to swim. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMV2VrK2Q7k |
Dang, that little sucker can juuummmppp! I love seeing his little legs going 90 under the water. He is soo cute and athletic and I've watched the video a few times already! Piper has that same go-for-it attitude; so now I'm thinking we'll shoot for a marina swim so I can be in the water, too, at first. Thank you so much for sharing great video of Jackson!! |
Just wanna say, I LOVE this video of Jackson and have watched it numerous times, I LOVE how he just FLIES into the pool, (also the music is very fitting) one day I would love to see my Cody do this. My past girls LOVED swimming. To jkpal, if you try the kiddie pool put just enough water in it to cover the top of her paws, to much water may scare her. I like the marina idea, you get in the water, grantee Piper will come in after you, you know how they always NEED to be near us lol, she will paddle out to you. Let us know how you make out. |
I'm not sure if Duchess loves the water. She will jump in if she's something she can chase. I took her to the pond and she saw a frog or something. She dove right in trying to get to the frog. Thankfully her leash was on because she wasn't wearing a life jacket. Totally surprised me. She actually stayed in for awhile so I guess she likes it or she was looking for the frog. Who knows with her....she always chasing something even in water |
Mine all seem to be terrified of the water. I would love to have them swim with me. I just don't know how to entice them. |

Matese, thanks so much for the information and I do believe Piper and I will do the marina. She may need a bit of coaxing, but with temps reaching 100+ you can bet I'll be in that water---she can take allll the time she needs! I will for sure let you know if I have a little guppy or a beach baby (either of which is perfectly fine!). Thank you again... |
My lil Ranger loves the pool. He is in and out of the water 3 or 4 times per day and he makes me a nervous wreck because he just runs and leaps. He is good at finding the stairs and getting himself out but before I can grab him to dry him off, he runs back to the side and jumps in again. Now he has a little ear infection so no swimming for 10 days. We're on day 5 and he just stands at the gate and cries. Diana |
Blazer loves swimming, too!!!!! :D We haven't had much opportunity to take him swimming but every time we have he loves it and he really hates getting (and staying) out of the water! |
Maybe Ranger needs a little bathing cap (can you imagine?)!!! Little honey, sounds like he'd do about anything necessary to get back in swim of things, right?! |

https://instagram.com/p/4CvuVfPBhE/ LOL!! But he loves the water. Jumping in didn't come naturally to him though. He wasn't a natural born fetcher and usually just would sit on the top step to cool off and get his belly wet. But when I started jumping in too, he couldn't stand it anymore and would want to jump in after me so bad. I began using toys and treats that he really liked to encourage him. Also the rafts helped a lot, he still feels more comfortable jumping on a raft first then just jumping into the water. Definitely don't force anything too much, always good to let them to learn to trust you and enjoy it themselves, but at the same time sometimes after a while you just have to give them a tiny 'push'. Like with Jax, the lifejacket had a little handle and with a tiny 'encouragement' pull a bit, I would let go of the handle and he would do the rest and jump in on his own. But I know my dog well and sometimes that's all he needs to realize 'oh hey! this is fun! I like this!' So just play it by ear and how you think she best will respond. Also I used to put the life jacket on him, I think it helped him want to jump in more, knowing his face wasn't going to go under, but now he never wears it. Almost all dogs naturally know how to swim, the life jacket is just to help aid them a bit, especially when learning how to get out, where the steps are, etc, so they don't wear themselves out and start to panic. I do think all dogs should learn how to swim without the jackets as well so they don't become dependent on them but they are great tools. Also for in dangerous type situations where you have currents etc. Quote:

Ok, now I am more in love with Jackson than ever...! The 'go' jump to raft 'go' just cracks me up--He is so intense and determined and cute. Thank you for your suggestions and I'll be sure that Piper is happy and comfortable every step (stroke?) of the way with this water business. As I say, she's got a little bit of that Jackson 'can do' attitude and thus far, as been willing to try new things. The videos are truly just delightful--I'm looking forward to the Summer 2015 Series!! |
Lola is a lot like Jackson both love to leap and dive in the water, I have even had Lola in several competitions which of course she never wins but it is fun to see her dive with the big dogs. I have to say that probably only about 10 or 15% of the yorkies out there like the water, between my sister and I we have had 7 and so far Lola is the only one to show an interest. I attend a lot of yorkie meetups and have friends with yorkies come for a visit and so far no one has like the water like Lola does. Having a yorkie that loves the water can be a challenge, we live on a lake and boat a lot and we now have to tether Lola because we don't want her leaping out of the boat, one time we were on our swim platform and she caught sight of some guys throwing a football about 100 yards away she lept into the water and started swimming towards the ball, we could not catch her, thankfully she had her life vest on and no boats were traveling at full speed near us. I also have to be careful with her at my sisters house because she has a big underground pool that Lola likes to get in. I love her so but she can be a pain and not let us relax by the pool, she loves to push her toy in the water and then expects us to get it for her, often she gives ups and goes in after it, but I constantly have to be on guard and watch her, LOL no falling asleep poolside |
