Question about Benadryl before Lola gets any vaccine I go early to the appointment and she gets a shot of Benadryl. I am changing vets and they charge $27 for it. I think that is a lot and want to give it to her myself. I can't seem to get a clear answer on how much to give and in what form. I would prefer the liquid but then I read somewhere to make sure it was all Benadryl and not other additives, I noticed on the children's bottles since it was flavored so there are ingredients in there I am not sure of. so for those of you that give your pup ingredients can you provide me with how much and what type of use?? Lola is almost 6 lbs. thanks for your help |
I just break a regular pill in half and stick it in a piece of cheese. He never knows it's there. Mine weighs 7 pounds, never had any issues with that dosage. $27 buys a lot of Bendadryl! |

I thought I read somewhere that liquids are also more concentrated? And it was about $20 for the benadryl shot here... So expensive.... |
I use the children's Benadryl, you can easily find it without the artificial sugar, however generic brands do have the fake sugar. They also carry a child's pill now, and for a 5 pound dog, I've been told to give 1/4 and go up to 1/2 if needed. I can't imagine giving 1/2 of an adult pill to a 5 pound dog. My DIL's 8 pound dog only takes 1/4 of an adult pill. So you might want to check this out more. |
1/4 of a table for about a 6 lb dog should be good. I would cut a tablet into quarters and put a piece of it in cheese or other food. I find it you part of a cheese slice and you mold the cheese around it, they have a harder time getting it out. Benadryl can be bitter so you really want to make sure they can't get to the pill once it is cut. |
My two are 15/16 pounds and they get half an adult tablet. |
Wylie's mom had posted on the forum a couple of weeks ago what the formula was for Benadryl vs. pounds but I can't remember the exact mg now. I just know that this weekend both my puppies were itching terribly and according to the post, my 5 lb. yorkie got 1/4 of a adult benadryl and my 11 lb. yorkie got 1/2 of one. They fell asleep for about 45 minutes about 10 minutes after I gave it to them but it helped a lot with their itching. |
The dose is 1-2 mg/per pound. :) |
