Hello Hello, Let me start off by saying that I am not currently owned by a Yorkie. I am the mother of a 12 year old daughter, who loves animals like me. We have one outside dog, a Beagle and an inside cat. I am considering adding a small inside dog to the mix sometime in the near future. Right now, I am researching several breeds to learn as much as I can about them so that I can make sure that I get one that will be well suited for us. |

Hello and welcome from over here! :) :wavey: Research is good! What other breeds are on the list? |
Hi and welcome to YT :). This thread may provide some helpful reading: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ent-guide.html |
Harrysmum,The breeds I am considering at the moment are (in no certain order) a Toy Poodle, Chihuahua, and of course a Yorkie. Wylie's Mom, thanks for the link I will definitely check it out! |
Welcome! I hope you find lots of information about the breed on here. I have 3 Yorkies. I got my first one in January when I was given a 9 year old old Yorkie, whom I absolutely adore. Then I was given a free Yorkie mix puppy, but ended up taking home 2! The first puppy we were getting was for my 17 year old daughter. I would like to say that if this puppy/dog is for your 12 year old that I have kids too. Even if she promises to feed/care for this dog the responsibility will fall on you, so do make sure you are prepared for that. My 17 year old is very responsible, but the first 3 weeks I found myself doing all the care for both puppies! She is stepping up now and doing more, as they are more and more trained. I adore the puppies so I do double the work, although some days she has both of them all day long and gets a taste of what I deal with daily with them. I hope you find the right breed for your family. Yorkies are curious, fun and get into lots of mischief. I was trying to type an email yesterday and one of them pooped on the couch, then I had to jump up and take something away they were chewing and then they got into something else, all in a 3 minutes time span. They are a lot of work, but the rewards are amazing. These little loyal and fearless monsters are worth all the work! Good luck finding the right dog for you. You can look into a rescue dog too. My 9 year old is the best dog in the world! Him and I are very close. A lot of love and patience with a rescue and you can have a dog that will love you for the rest of their life. It took him over a month to learn to play but he does. It just takes lots of patience. Puppies are great that they can be brought up with your children though. |
Welcome ! I noticed you are considering a Toy Poodle, Chihuahua, and Yorkie. I have had all three breeds throughout the years and in my experience all three were wonderful. That said, i noticed the Toy poodle was soooooo much easier to teach and train (potty train) but, they were all sweet and loving companions. Truth be told Zoey ( Yorkie ) is my favorite though. It's really a hard choice because all three breeds are great. All the best in your search. |

My experience also....but my Yorkies really got into my heart and soul!! I love the book, "Yorkies For Dummies"....it will help you decide if Yorkies are really the breed you are wanting! |
JadeD, The puppy/dog will be for both of us and I am already expecting to do most of the effort in training and caring for it. Since, I am looking for a purebred puppy, I will more than likely be purchasing from a breeder. However, I would still consider getting one from a rescue. Belladea, Thank you for your input! I will be training the future family member to use puppy pads rather than going outside, as we have several neighborhood dogs come in to our yard at times (our Beagle is kept in a pen in our fenced in back yard and the only time she is let out is when we are around to watch her). Did you train yours to use puppy pads or to go outside? Also, which one of the three was the hardest to potty train? Yorkiemom1, Thank you for the book recommendation! I ordered the book today and it should be arriving Tuesday. I hope you don't mind me asking, but what was your experience with potty training? |

That was how my daughter's puppy was to be, for both of us, so I was prepared to really help out a lot. Then we were offered a 2nd puppy and so I ended up with my own! LOL. Now we have 2 15 week old puppies running around here. My 9 year old Yorkie and my husband's 4 1/2 year old English Setter. It is wild here. I do a lot of the work with the puppies, but my daughter is definitely stepping up and doing more with them as they are getting a little older. Good luck with finding the right puppy or dog for you and her. Whatever breed you select I think you will be happy with. I love my Yorkies so very much, but that doesn't mean they are the right fit for you. Yorkies can be difficult to house train, head strong and stubborn. However, they are loyal and loving and oh my gosh are their antics funny! My puppy and my 9 year old Yorkie sleep in my bed with my husband and I. My daugther's puppy sleeps in her bed. They are such cuddle bugs too! Good luck! |
