How much water are yorkies supposed to drink? My 12 week old puppy might not be drinking enough water. I've read that 1 oz of water per one pound of body weight is optimal. That would be 3 oz of water for him per day. He only drinks 1.5 oz though in one day, which is half. His nose is dry. How can I make him drink? I have been squirting water in his mouth with a dropper, but he won't take more than 5 droppers, which is just 5 ml in total, almost nothing. What else can I try? He does pee about 5 times a day, small quarter size puddles (on my carpet). He stays outside for an hour and then comes in to pee on the carpet. Anyways, I am doing the potty training, but worried about the amount of water he drinks. |
My 14 week old puppies have water available for them at all times during the day. I have 4 dogs in the house, so we have about 6 water bowls spread throughout it. I fill each with fresh water each morning and then during the day I refill any as needed. My oldest Yorkie will paw at the dish if it is empty to alert me, and my youngest will carry an empty bowl and bring it to me, so they are rarely any empty bowls around. Is the dogs urine a very dark yellow? Very strong smelling? If it is a lighter yellow they are probably fine. If the odor is not very strong they are probably drinking enough. I don't measure how much mine drink because I see them go and drink several times a day and they will drink what they need. Like people, different dogs have different amounts of water needed. I drink far less than my husband does. I mean I drink 1/4 of what he takes in for sure and I get enough for what I need. Is the puppy active and full of energy? |

Is he eating wet food or dry food? If he is eating wet food he can get water from that. |
He always has water available and he is eating 2 oz. of raw food per day (90% meat - 10% whole foods). His urine is light colored and doesn't smell too much. But shouldn't his nose be wet at all times? He is active if we play with him, otherwise just likes to sit on our lap and doze. He is still a puppy, just 12 weeks old, I guess they sleep a lot. |
We just had Sophie at the vet for not eating/drinking and I asked the vet how much water she needed in a day if she wasn't drinking as she is usually willing to take from a syringe when she isn't wanting to eat. She weighs about 5lbs and the vet left the exam room and said she was going to go do some sort of calculation and came back and said if she isn't eating or drinking at all it works out that she would need about 1/2 cup of water a day, less if she is eating wet food or treats with water content (her treats these days are carrots, frozen green beans and bananas). She said if she still didn't drink the water willingly to add some extra water to canned food so she is getting enough water through out the day. I know she weighs more than your little one, but I just thought I would give you the answer our vet gave me for our 5 pounder! |
1/2 cu is 4 oz, so that makes sense for wet food. |

Thanks Lilbit. |
I have water available all day long up until 8pm and than it comes up to prevent potty issues in the house during the night. Your pup should be drinking as needed, as long as he has water available and know where it is he should be fine. Pups tend to drink in the am, with meals, when overheated and after a good play. If he's eating, playing and pottying on a regular basis and as long as he isn't dehydrated he should be fine. |
I leave it available all day but I take it away an hour before his last potty trip of the night. |
