Adopting a 3 yr old rescue...1st dog...help Tomorrow I pick up and bring home the most charming little female Yorkie. I've never had a dog before but have had cats. I need all the help and advice I can get. She has Addisons disease and needs to take meds twice a day. Any suggestions? |
Patience and lots of love. You will find lots of help on here plus training help on the internet. She will be loving you in no time and will be so willing to please. Rescued animals know they have never been treated so well. Kudos to you for rescuing such a precious baby. |
:animal-paCongratulations. You will find that Yorkies are the best and sometimes leads to getting a second or more. You are so special giving a special needs fur baby a home. Hope you can post pictures. This forum loves to share |
welcome to YT and thank you for rescuing this little girl. When you bring her home, let her check out her new home, she will most likely follow you all around. Let her do things on her own pace, she needs to gain trust in you and her new home. If you are going to pee pad train her, show her where her pad is, she has to learn all new words now, like pee-pee and poo-poo, or do you know what words were used for potty. Have you selected a name for this little girl yet. There is a wealth of information on YT. Any questions, concerns, just ask. YT has many members so willing to share their experience, advise and suggestions. Good luck with your new baby. Picture please when you get a chance, we all LOVE pictures. |
Bless your heart and congrats!! Very happy for you. Addison's should be quite easy to manage w/ daily meds...so hopefully that's been all squared away for you. Your new kiddo should do just great! Welcome to YT :)! |
She's home It was a 50 mile trip home and she did just great. She's had a lot of confusion in her life lately. She was with her original owner who could no longer keep her, then spent 3 weeks with a rescue person and now is here with us :) Today she is off to the Vet for a visit and check-up. Thanks for your help. |
Hi Susan, I rescued a 8-9 year old female yorkie 5 days ago. Although I do have an 8 year old male since he was a puppy so I am used to dogs and Yorkies. Once you have a Yorkie you will want to have more. They are the best breed in my eyes. My girl seems to be following me about a lot even if I am only going into another room for a brief second. I joined YT 6 years ago when Alfie was a pup but I have just come back this week and the ladies here have been great giving me advise on how to deal with two Yorkies. Can wait to hear updates and see some pictures of your new baby. xx |

Post us a piccie of the little doll if you can! |
Piper Thanks for all the encouragement. It's easier than I thought. I read 2 books and I thought I would have to pay close attention to her all the time, but she's just happy to be where I go. This morning we went for a walk and she helped me change the sheets and now we're off to Home Depot. She's eaten people food for the last three years and now I need to get her to start on dog food. The Vet suggested leaving the dog food in her dish and supplement with chicken, ham, white rice. I cut up a watermelon and she loved a few small pieces. I'd like to hear what foods, dog and human others use. |
melon, cantelope, broccoli, green beans, carrots, apple, banana chips... there is so much these little guys like that surprises me. Then as for people food, chicken, seared salmon, they are omnivores for certain! |
I am so glad you took her in! 6 months ago I took in a 9 year old male Yorkie. He is the best! It took him about 6 weeks of being with me before he would play with a toy, now we have our own game we play with each other. It will take time for her full personality to emerge so be patient and expect her to change over time with you. Don't give up on her playing even if she won't at first. I just kept trying to get my Yorkie to play and then one evening he did and although he is older and doesn't play all the time, when he is in the mood we play. I got 2 Yorkie puppies a month ago. They are like potato chips and once you get one, you want more. LOL Good luck and feel free to post any other questions you have. I would try to get them off people food for sure, unless you plan to cook all her meals for her. Getting them balanced can be a trick though. I would probably try sprinkling parmesan on dog food and see if she will eat it, or mix some plain yogurt (just a teaspoon or less) into her food and see if she will eat it. Good luck and I can't wait to see updates! |
good for you for rescuing this little soul, patience and love |
