Separation anxiety? So I've had my Yorkie for a month and a half now, I got him from the shelter. And from the very beginning we left him for about 4 hours a day and last week when we left he peed in my room(which is where he sleeps) usually I keep the door closed but that day I guess I left it open and today I left him for about 3.5 hours and he pooped and peed all over the kitchen. It was loose stool and when we came home he was just sleeping on the couch? So is this separation anxiety or did something literally scare the poop out of him? News said it was going to thunder but I heard nothing and I was in the next town over so who knows. Any help would be appreciated! Maybe I should crate train him? |
Is he potty trained to go outside or pad trained? You might try an exercise pen with food, water, bed and a pee pad. Also, do you have any background on him? Pics would be great😀 |
He is house trained! Would a pen have the same effect as a crate? I feel like he's just anxious because he's very protective but I'm not expert lol im going to keep leaving him for the next week and see how he does. Hopefully it's not anxiety because the only time he follows me is when he knows it's time to eat haha and he doesn't follow or bark or anything when I leave |
It's not exactly the same as a crate. He would have more room in a pen. Some people have good luck with crating but I would hate to leave for long periods of time and leave him in a crate. That's why I wondered if he had any background info. It's possible he was crated in the past and doesn't know what to do when you are away. Good luck...maybe others will chime in. I just saw your post had not been answered so hopefully you'll get more feedback. |

It's hard to say if what you have described is separation anxiety since symptoms are variable and sustained over time. My Teddy has separation anxiety and pants, paces, pees on the front door, marks from anxiety, howls, poops and stomps in it for hours whilst jumping up and down in the same spot....etc. He displayed this behavior over a number of months. There is no way I could let him roam free when I'm away because it would be unsafe for him and my house would be destroyed. Therefore, I'd suggest just keeping an eye on it over the next couple of weeks and then consider the source of the problem. Also, if you did get this little guy from the shelter, contact them to ask for a referral to a behaviorist for the other issues. I have recommended that another member do the same with their adopted dog and had wonderful feedback regarding the positive results and cooperation of the shelter. |
