Why is this.....
 
I've had Harlie for almost two weeks. We've been gradually working on her getting used to wearing a collar or harness by having her wear it for longer periods each day. She has been cooperative about letting me put them on, but today she seemed to freak out about wearing the collar. She fought me and yelped. Is this a stage or have I done something wrong? She turned 12 weeks yesterday.

Any advice is welcomed.

I would caution against a collar just because so many have issues with the throat area.

Probably just typical puppy behavior. Each time she allows you to put on her collar or harness, reward her with a treat or take her outside (only after she has had all of her shots). She needs to associate the collar or harness with something good.

As soon as my little one see's me getting the harness, she assumes the position with pleasure because she knows that could only mean one thing. She is going outside.

This is true, I only use the collar for her tags which she has on 24 hours a day. But for walking I use her harness.

Is she reacting that way just to the collar or both that and the harness? What material are they made of?

Generally pups are still with there moms until 12 weeks so maybe it's just a I'm young and this is new and scary thing. Make sure that when the collar is on your not hooking the leash to it the only thing the leash should be hooked to the harness. Could it have pinched the pup or got caught on something when she had it on? When you put it on have you tried giving her a treat and keeping her busy so she dosent have time to notice it? Sometimes with some pups it takes longer because it's new to them.

Well only if your hooking a leash to it, having one on for just tags is fine.

Thank you for all of your replies. I have read about the throat issues and I only plan on using a collar for tags. I will use the harness for walking. We haven't gotten to leash training yet - still trying to get used to the harness.

Both the harness and leash are made of nylon material. I don't know if she will react this way to the harness. I haven't tried the harness today since she got so freaked out about the collar.

I will try the treat when I put the collar or harness on.

She hasn't been outside yet - she still has more shots left. I can't wait to see how she likes the outside. 😊

Honestly it could have been the smallest thing that spooked her. Distraction is always great with puppies :D

If you are only outside when walking, I have a harness with a small d-ring that you can attach the tags to. If they could possibly get outside on their own, a collar might not be a bad idea. I just always worry about damage if they get hung on something.

Most yorkies are small enough for a cat breakaway collar. I keep Callie's lose enough that if she gets stuck she can slide her head out.

Peanut acted the same way when we first tried a collar on him. I would put it on him and then distract him with treats and toys. When I added his tags, we had to deal with the problem all over again but he soon got used to it. I like the break away cat collar as I'm always afraid of him getting hung up on something. Since the collar is just for tags, it works well. I think your little one is just frightened by something new.

It's a puppy thing. All of my puppies excluding my newest addition did this weird neck roll when first introduced to their collars. I currently have Buddy Belt collars in 6-8 in and they're perfect for puppies or smaller adults. Just be careful that it's tight enough, but loose enough to slip a finger under. The collars can get caught in their mouths if loose enough.
