Torturing of any living being is not "culture" ... I don't care WHAT country it occurs in.

This thread is disgusting to me...that anyone could condone the torturing of animals/living beings is beyond me.

I probably don't need to come back to this thread.

Depressing to see how people excuse the torture of any living being. .. even going so far as to say it is done in the US???? How anyone can justify it is so disheartening.

No one condoned the torture of any animals, this was cleared up on the fourth page about halfway down. I was mistaken in what Wylie's Mom was trying to convey.

ladyjane 06-18-2015 03:45 PM

I read the earlier posts and thought about it for some time before deciding to post. I did not see what when down later in the afternoon. I just went to the end of the thread and posted.

I only saw that people were comparing what people eat instead of how they obtained the food. I also saw a comment about how the US kills cows and I did not see how that justified ignoring what they do in China. I am happy that people now see that they were not comparing the same things.

Matters not...either people will sign the petition or they won't sign it. I personally would sign any petition against anyone torturing animals no matter where they lived anf no matter how I felt about the two minutes I might be losing. It is always worth trying imho.

Just saw this on my FB feed. Warning: some graphic pictures.

If you don't want to look at the link, the main point of this article I'd like to point out is that "asia's dog meat industries slowly dying".

I am going to have to take your word on what's in the article as i just do not want to look at the pics. It sounds like even the Chinese realize it's wrong.

Wow! While I don't really condone this kind of violence against humans either, it does really point out that dogs are really important to many Chinese and the dog meat industry has a great chance of becoming obsolete very soon.

I came across this articles and the say they have a combined 3 million signatures with all of the different petitions going on. It's schedule for the 21st. I hope we are able to stop it. I've signed several different petitions.

Boy was I wrong. The petition actually stopped the dog meat carnival. Good going everyone.

Yes, the festival was stopped in 2011 in a different province. The current petition for Yulin has almost 3 million signatures. China has the second highest rates of rabies in the WORLD. The manner in which (some) of these vendors obtain the animals with no proper care (including vaccines) that one should give anything they consider livestock is disgusting. But the fact that anyone has such a high chance of eating a rabid animal should have consumers of dog meat saying "Hell No!"

Wow, that's some excellent proof that these petitions do have some impact, and maybe we can still stop the one in Yulin.

Slow but steady. :) Seeing articles like that gives encouragement and shows others that if enough ppl band together, WE CAN make a difference. :D

These petitions make an impact, even if the change is only due to boycotts leading to economic change I support other cultures, but I can't ever support the in humane treatment of animals. I signed the petition. Thanks for sharing this.

MarkFromSea 06-22-2015 08:48 AM

I made the mistake of watching some youtube videos on it.. nightmares and horrible waking thoughts.

Pets are being stolen at an alarming rate to be sold at the festival. Some of the stolen dogs have been identified at the festival. Some still have their collars on. In photos it appears some of the dogs are still alive while scalding/boiling water is used to remove their hair.

This is just sick and inhumane!

Opium88 06-28-2015 12:03 PM

I've signed several of these. The best thing to do if you want to help is donate to the Chinese activists actually doing the fighting. I would end up in a Chinese prison if I witnessed that. I would absolutely lose my s**t and get violent .

Voicing your opinion and signing petitions is a waste of energy unless you can come up with a solution. For years Americans have been complaining about the way we prepare beef. Oprah tried to fight against the beef industry. They shut her up good. There's also a recent documentary on how the beef industry is destroying our ecosystem and polluting our land due to feces and blood from the slaughter house. Yet, no one has come up with a solution and the demand for beef keeps increasing so these beef manufacturers continues with their operation.

Problems like this have brought powerful people together and discuss population control which is the root cause of such issues and GMO foods.

I am posting without reading the whole thread. .. so please forgive me if I misunderstand or repeat.

I agree about the meat industry in the us. I teach food production and spend a lot of time on choices with my students. I show FOOD INC. and we study other documentaries and publications. I do my best to make my students aware. That is our power... knowledge and choice (our purchasing power)

I think the power we have is the power of what we buy. There are small changes.... but we need so much more and that will not happen until we stop buying gmo and meat that is not raised or killed humanely.

I love meat but have stopped eating most except fish and chicken. free ranged. I have friends who won't drink milk or use eggs.. I just don't know how much is right or wrong anymore.

On the dogs in China. Oh how sick.... I do wish I had the power and I admire the rescue groups in China that are doing something. I do think killing a dog is different then stock animals in that they are our pets and are loving and intelligent (one of the reasons I question eating pork). I think the people of China are taking steps to stop the festival, I LOVE the pictures of the dog thieves beaten up!!! One good thing.

In addition to the killing of dogs in a horrific way be aware of the killing of whales and dolphins and the killing of sharks for shark fin soup..... the list goes on and on and on. Just the pictures of dogs in kill shelters makes me ill.

Knowledge is the only way all this will change. imo

UPDATE FOR 2016

Hello All -

Sadly, it's the time of year again where we ALL need to take the time to bring more awareness to and help put an end to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

Despite how difficult it is to learn the details surrounding this "festival of torture", we all must be willing to be part of the change if we wish to see that change.

Please educate yourself via the still-valid links in the first post of this thread. Then, please do something...anything...to help put an end to the purposeful and planned torture of innocent beings.

Progress has been made, and progress will continue as long as people like us continue to put our efforts forward.

Pass the word on to as many people as you can...

And now, let's cross all our fingers and paws that next year, there will not be a need to resurrect this thread.

Thanks all!

:love::animal-pa:love::animal-pa:love:

Just signed it.
I never heard of this horrendous festival before, but I was aware that those in
China cook and eat dog meat. We need to stop it....stop the madness where our best friends are being killed for food. It's not right... It's not right... It's so not right!! :(

MissPixi 05-04-2016 09:42 PM

Signed the petitions and donated.

The whole thing is so heart wrenching...This must stop.

Piddle Place 05-05-2016 07:31 AM

Insanity

I have signed a petition on this, and I will find it and share. I agree about different cultures, and in some countries starving people will eat whatever is available. However, this is not the case here. This is a festival! These are not desperate people waiting for their next meal.

My issue is that over the last few hundred years, we humans have domesticated dogs (I am so grateful for this) With this domestication, dogs have lost much of their survival instincts, aggressive instincts, and have learned to trust and rely on the human relationship.

To betray this trust sets us back many years. Its a disgrace to humanity and they should be ashamed.

Kathy

{{{ This article is from the Huffington Post here (warning, graphic pictures via link) about an event called the "Yulin Dog Meat Festival" that occurs in China on June 21st. It's abhorrently cruel - where 10,000+ dogs are killed - often skinned and boiled alive for human consumption. There are no words for this, as this is beyond barbaric and SICK. PLEASE take a moment to pass this on, post it elsewhere, tweet it, instagram it, sign the petition at the end of the article...please do something. I'm posting it here in the General area so that it gets more attention. This is not a judgment against other cultures, this is a plea to end pointless torture of our fellow beings. Thank you. }}}

Gruesome Yulin Dog Festival Must End! You Have a Voice

The world is full of cruel, barbaric acts and images -- what with ISIS beheading people on video and human traffickers said to sell more people into slavery than in the 19th century. Some of this we can do little about as one single person, despite our hope to the contrary.

Yet, one inhumane tradition happens each summer in southern China that can be stopped -- and must be stopped -- with voices from you and I. It is as simple as 1+1+1 = the tsunamia of social media.

Each June 21, the Yulin Dog Meat Festival takes place in Guangxi province. It is real, despite local government protests to the contrary. In it, the meat from thousands of dogs and cats are consumed.

These nearly 10,000 sentient animals arrive to Yulin in appalling conditions -- often stuffed into cages and dragged on poles -- and the manner in which they're killed, skinned and eaten is horrific, with many clubbed, burned, electrocuted and some skinned alive, according to local activist reports. It is simply torture.

The people of Yulin have celebrated the Summer Solstice with this festival since the 1990s, and use the dog and cat meat to eat with lychees and drink grain alcohol. They do not consider any of the above conditions an issue, not even the way the animals arrive or are killed, cooked and consumed.

Animal rights groups and acivitists for years have been trying to stop the festivities. Yet, despite huge social media protest inside China, it's scheduled to happened again this June.

Just recently, Twitter globally alit with the horrifying images of the event with hopes to shame and put pressure on local authories to stop the festival.

Learn what you can about this event. CNN has done some good reporting on it. Other media outlets have, as well.

Keep up the pressure! Western consumers of Chinese products and Chinese tourism have a good deal of power. Let us use it.

TIME reports it well: TIME.

I've seen photos of this so-called Yulin Festival and it is indeed gruesome. Every nations has their own cultures and beliefs but this is too much. Not a single dog deserves to experience that horrible abuse. Not being racist, but I don't know what's wrong with Chinese people and whoever invented this Festival must have a missing soul. I personally Chinese people who are also dog lovers and I have seen videos and picture of dogs over the internet showcasing some of the dogs' fun time and being loved by their owners who are Chinese. So, I don't understand why no one in China fought against this festival or if there is, why aren't they succeeding as there are also a huge population of dog lovers in China?

I've signed, donated and pray it makes a difference. This is too horrible to comprehend. Believe it or not, there are plenty of Chinese activists who are against this and are trying to work to end this horrid festival, too. From what I understand, the government "itself" no longer supports this "festival", but it doesn't stop small groups or individuals on this. Nor has there been an official ban (or an enforced ban, at least) on it legally, as far as I'm aware of. Even many article mentions that this is a dying trade (thankfully) that even families of the traders are complaining against it. The only thing we can hope for is that this trade dies out completely.

Was just doing some more reading about Yulin, and came across this picture.

This picture? It literally just breaks something inside me when I see it.

Please, if you can, sign petitions and pass any information on to others who'd be interested in doing something...anything...

I think in L.A. (and maybe other places too), there were going to be some marches / protests, but I'm not sure where to find out about them.
