Shorter hair in summer? I like Ruger's coat a little longer, but should they be cut a little shorter in the summer? He's not shown or anything. |
It will not hurt the dog. Its just your personal preference. its certainly more convenient because we do a ton of stuff outdoors in the summer and dogs tend to get dirtier from playing out doors and a long coat can be problematic. It will grow back just be mindful towards late summer and fall if you want it to be longer for the colder months but then, there are tones of coats, boots, and sweaters on the market.... |
Along the same lines . . . I also believe it is a matter of personal preference and the individual dog. Caring for a shorter coat is easier. It can be cooler for the dog, but for my boys it doesn't make a difference. We can't go out for long in the heat of the day no matter what, unless we stay on grass. The boys are comfortable in the house in their long coats. If I cut Teddy's coat, he would have to wear clothes inside in the air conditioning. I cut Max's beard short about a month ago. He seems to miss his long facial hair. It was what he was accustomed to, I guess. :) |
Preference and lifestyle!! I shave all mine down for summer! My best friend thinks cuttint all that gorgeous long flowing hair is sacrilegious and she chastises me relentlessly! But it is conducive to OUR preferences and OUR lifestyle! |
I keep Mac's shorter in summer,seems more comfortable. |

My puppies are 6 and 8 months old. Obviously they haven't been through a summer yet. It hasn't reached the high Temps here yet, only getting so far to the mid 80s and Duncan is already panting a lot. I haven't cut either of their coats yet except for around their feet, in between their pads and a sanitary cut. I really want to grow their coats long. Their facial hair and topknots still aren't long enough to stay back. My question is, since Duncan seems so warm, if i do cut his hair, will it grow back any faster than it has so far? Both of their hair seems to grow so slowly. I don't want to cut it only to have it as long at the beginning of next summer as it is now and then having to cut it again but i don't want poor Duncan to be miserable if he is hot from having long hair. I guess my question is, does their hair grow any faster as they get older? |
My girl has shown to get hotter with longer hair during the warmer season by panting a lot randomly. I want her comfortable, so I have her cut in a shorter cut for now. For the most part, my preference is having longer ears/head, but keep the body and beard shorter, but I'll gladly go with shorter if that's what makes her more comfy. So for now, it's much shorter in the warmer seasons and left longer in the cooler seasons. |
2 Attachment(s) We love Zeus's hair long; however, being down here in Muggy Mississippi, we had no choice but to Teddy Bear cut. You can see in the two pics -- one is longer hair and the second is his new haircut. I am so proud to say my husband did it himself! |

Thank you! I will definitely tell him. He was very proud. He watched youtube videos on the teddy bear cut (longer hair on head and legs) for days. |
Buddybear just got his grooming and I have his back cut shorter with fluffy legs and his regular face trim. He's adorable. My groomer thinks their hair helps insulate them so she doesn't recommend cutting it too short. |
We do short hair cuts in the summer because we live in a desert. It is way too hot here to have full coats, even in the air conditioning. My two love it and then we grow it back out when it's cooler. |
I use to keep my pups in full coat all year round except for Ruby my cotton coat Yorkie but now that the two older ones are 13 and almost 11 I keep them in a shorter cut. Its much easier on me, way less time to groom and so much less stressful on them when it comes time to groom. Now Ruby is a different story I've always kept her in a modifies Schnauzer cut and I love it. I've also been doing a Joey cut on her which is mostly the same except the skirt is also shaved. |
Teddy has all his hair cut and proudly displays his manhood with each new trim..haha. Seriously, if you're not showing your dog and it's hot or too time consuming or overwhelming to provide the upkeep required for a long coat, go short! Teddy always zooms around the house after he's been to the groomer. He loves it and so do I! |
