Advice with lepto shot I have had some concerns with vaccinating my almost 13 week puppy with lepto. He's done great with the DHPP and Bordatella, and he was due to get his lepto shot last week and I refused to let the vet vaccinate him with lepto and the DHPP, so I had scheduled his lepto shot alone for tomorrow and cancelled it because I am still unsure. I have driven myself crazy reading all the terrible side effects this vaccine causes and I don't know what to do. I just want to know what your experiences have been with vaccinating your puppy with lepto alone (not the combo DHLPP shot). Vet tells me its common in my area, especially in the summer now, and while I do want him to be protected against it, I don't want him to get a bad reaction to the shot. I've heard of dogs dying after the shot! I appreciate any input in advance :-) |
This is not a shot I'd get for my kiddos unless it was absolutely endemic to my area. I'd be asking your vet for incidence and prevalence information... |

All I have seen is anecdotal evidence, but it seems that the Lepto shot is really tough on these little guys. I have refused to do the Lepto shot on Bella. |
I don't do Lepto either because of what I've read. |
I don't give lepto to my yorkies. I gave it to my larger breed dog, but didn't know any better at the time (3 years ago). It's actually in my contracts not to give Lepto to my yorkies. Do you have access to statistical data regarding the occurrence of lepto for animals in your area? As suggested by Wylie's mom I'd speak with my vet about it after researching myself. If you do give it, have it administered as a standalone vaccine a month from the last vaccine. |
I think I commented on your earlier thread that you recently had. I don't do Lepto but have done it in the past. The vaccine does not cover the emerging strains of the disease, and many small breeds are very susceptible to reactions due to this vaccine. We have lepto in our environment but I feel that my dogs are at a low risk and can't justify the vaccine. |
After Jackson had a horrid reaction as a pup at 12 weeks old, I can't get it nor would I ever.... |
I live in TX and my vet usually DOES give the lepto shot to dogs over 5 lbs. ( Cricket weighs about 8). However because of her Liver Shunt problem ( she had surgery) my vet still doesn't want to risk it with her. My mom and dad's Bassett hound however does get the lepto shot. |

My vet specifically told me, she does not give Lepto to small dogs. However, she also added, it's not necessary in our area as Lepto is not prevalent. |
Is anyone aware of recent thought on this? Our small suburban yard is backed by woods and we frequently see deer in our front yard. The vet recommended a combo Lyme Disease and lepto shot, but the puppy's barely three pounds. i'm feeling very conflicted.... |
I also live in a heavily wooded area, deers galore. I do give the Lime vaccine but not the lepto. In my township Lime prevention is almost a core vaccine. |
I've heard bad things about this shot. The breeder I got my yorkies from also told me not to let them get it. |
Leptospirosis is endemic to my part of Illinois (plenty of wildlife traipses through our back yard), so it was a recommended vaccination for us. Bella got her vaccination and did not have any bad reaction to it. Each dog responds differently, I suppose. |
