Shorkie help! We recently bought a shorkie. Took him to the vet to get his second puppy shot, and they weighed him in all of his check up stuff. We know he's grown a Ton since we got him. But they told us he was how ever many kilos, and they turned it into pounds, WOW, he is approaching the 6 pound mark, at 11/12 weeks. Is this normal? Is it possible for him to finish his growing very early/very soon and stay at that weight and height ? We do have an bichon shih tzu, who is 12 years old, and weights 15 ish pounds. We were hoping that our shorkie would not be as big as him. |
Hi and welcome to YT! Congrats on your new little one :)! I think he will continue to grow until about 6 months or so. |
pictures please?? |
What do they breed to make a Shorkie? How large were the parents? |
I have had 3 Shih Tzu's and still have one. Maggie weighed 11 lbs, George 10lbs, and Harry is currently at 30lbs..in his defense he's on medication thats made him gain weight, but he was always on the larger side. Shih Tzu's are bigger in general then Yorkies. I know there are small ones, but typically they can be up to 17lbs. Yorkies are much smaller, but alas my lil girl is a teapot (official member of the club) and is 8 months old and 11.2 lbs. I dont see her growth spurt slowing down at all..in fact, since I've gotten her good and healthy she's more active then ever but just a big girl. More to love:) |
1 Attachment(s) He is a mix between a shih tzu and a yorkie. Creating a shorkie. One parent was 8 pounds, and one was 5. The breeder figured he would be no bigger than 10 when he's finished growing |
Honestly, he may be a big boy. My 10 lb Shih Tzu wasn't quite 5lbs at 6 months. He didnt finish growing for a full year. |
He's adorable......Absolutely adorable. |
Thank you all for the warm welcome and for the compliments on the little guy. He truly is adorable. Has quiet the personality on him. We are thinking there could be something in him that the breeders just didn't want to share. Because he is growing very fast. But he is 3 months ish, so even if he doubles he will be slightly under 12 pounds. We will love him either way :) This is the most current photo of our shorkie, Bentley. He does not look like he is as heavy as he is. People are stunned to hear he is almost 6 pounds. |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you for the warm welcomes and some background Info on the breeds he is mixed with so I can get an idea of where he will be for weight. Also thank you for the compliments, he is a very adorable and spunky little guy. We are hoping he won't go much over 10 pounds. Even if he doubles his weight in the next 3 months he will be under 12 pounds, and will than be 6 months and basically done growing. We will love him either way though :) A ton of people who have either seen him when we first got him, or just recently seen him, have been pretty surprised by his weight actually, no one believe is is really 5-6 ish pounds! So that is one thing we are a bit concerned about, if he has a lot more filling in to do and he will stay the height is currently is. I guess it would depend on what breed he's taking after for the body and build????? (Most curren photo of the little guy, Bentley:animal36 ) |
Both guys are good looking lil chaps! Sometimes, recessive genes just assert themselves and we get bigger than expected "little" dogs. Good luck with your new guy! |
My full yorkie was seven pounds at ten weeks. He is now about nine months. He is eleven pounds. Although he is a big fella, don't get too worried about largish puppy weights. My vet does not think my guy is going to get much bigger. When he was young I was thinking he might get up to fifteen pounds. There are plenty of yorkies that are that large or larger. I prefer the big guys myself. Luv the little fellas too. |
Hi and welcome to YT! Your puppy might slow down growing or he might turn out to be a bigger dog. My Duncan is 8 months old and currently weighs 11 lbs. He weighed 4 lbs. at 10 weeks. I don't think he is finished growing yet as he has gained weight this month even. I enjoy him being a teapot yorkie. There is more to hug and love. He is a very laid back and loveable little man. He enjoys cuddling and hugging which I love. Good luck with your new puppy. |
