Determining size from parents
 

If mom is 9 1/2 lbs, and dad is 6 1/2 lbs , should the pups expect to be above the 7 lb range? Is there a way to guesstimate that??

Genetics determining size go farther back than just the parents. My boys are larger than their parents, more like their paternal grandparents. Their littermates are considerably smaller.

Usually you can take the weight at 12 weeks and double it to come up with a guesstimate on weight. My oldest yorkie, Rasta, parents are 6lbs(dam) and a little over 4lbs(sire). Rasta's a whopping 2.5 lbs right now. Smaller than both his parents and grandsire/dam. I would look at past litters with that particular bitch/dog to get a better idea of what sizes they throw, but you still may be surprised lol.

Can I be nosey and ask why? Lol. Generally a reputable breeder will only breed dogs that follow the standard which is not to exceed 7 pounds.

I'm looking at my options for a new pup, and I'm finding I don't have many options. I don't want to buy from Tiffanysteacupyorkies because well, the name speaks for and against itself. There's some ranch that'll breed you a plethora of whatever designer breed you want, that is a big no for me... I've found one that looks priming. Other than that there's few choices ... I don't know. New Mexico doesn't have a whole lot of options it seems. If I'm wrong please tell me and point me in a good direction

Don't you have aggression issues with one of yours now?

Cali's parents are giants compared to her. She is 4lbs with a very petite build whereas the mother is probably 15lbs now and the dad is around 12. However, the mom's parents and the dad's parents were in the 5lb and under range and built more like Cali. So, this long winded thing is just to say the size can come from further down the line as well.

Many reputable breeders will breed a female over 7 pounds, that's only one part of standard, it depends on all the other qualities the dog processes and some larger dogs throw smaller dogs, so you can't just take weight only into consideration. There are so many things to take into consideration like health, structure, overall proportions, color, hair type, etc. It's wrong when the breeder is breeding purposely for dogs that are bigger than 7 pounds, or is just using a larger dog so she can get more pups. We've been working with Toby and he hasn't acted out again since the one incident. He's actually starting to calm down considerably. Izzie seemed to calm down right at the 6 month mark. Toby is now right around 11 months and is starting to chill out finally. I've been trying that positive reinforcement training stuff and I think it's working, cause he's finally learning to play tug o war with izzy instead of snagging it from her. And I gave them both little hoofs and they trade back and forth a lot but he isn't being as possessive about it like before. He's actually started to toss his toys across the room at her. It's been really nice. The only time he's aggressive anymore is when it comes to having his face groomed. We also started taking them to the dog parks and letting them play and run for hours at a time, and I think maybe that has helped a lot to. We go in the evenings every other day and whenever it's nice outside during the day I go by myself with them . He isn't as spastic since we started that consistently. And at the park he's actually pretty respectful of the other dogs space. I thought he'd be out of hand, but he's actually usually the one fending off other intrusive dogs rather than the other way around. I think maybe he's growing out of his puppy phase finally . Or he had some life altering epiphany I'm not aware of. Either way I'm happy with his behavior

Ruger is 12 lbs. Yes, he's a big Yorkie, and I had no idea when I got him, but it happens. I would say unless you go way back you probably won't know. My understanding is that a lot of breeders use small males and large females hoping to get more pups. Of course when he started to get bigger there was no way I was going to take him back or give him up. :aimeeyork

Using larger females is also for health reasons. My understanding is that an 8 pound Yorkie doesn't necessarily guarantee a larger litter than a 5 or 6 pound one, although chances are better. Many of the show breeders here have commented that they like their breeding females to be a little longer in the back because they tend to whelp easier.
