Advise on puppy seizures please Our pup is now 10 weeks old and started having seizures in the morning hours, 2-3 times about. Very upsetting to see and feel so sorry for her. For some reason she got fluid on her lungs and needed an oxygen tank to clear it. She was then fine for a week and another few seizures. She is such a bundle of joy and energy. All the tests are negative for normal Yorkie ailments, like liver shunt etc. It was advised that she rather be put down especially coz she is so young still. But i cant! The only viable option is that they started on epileptic medicine drops, its week 1 now. I desperately need advise please - does anyone have similar experiences, how to treat, suggestions etc...??? |
So sorry to hear you're going thru this w/ this little one. How long have you had her? At 10 weeks, she should really still be with her Momma (until 12 weeks). Do you know why the breeder let her go early? Was she having seizures at the breeders and did you talk to them about what's happening? I would def try the seizure meds bc if they work well, it could be your answer. I truly hope they work! |
How heart breaking this is happening to your baby. I would try to seizure meds first before I would consider putting her down. Just truly sad! |
I'm sure by now you are attached to this title soul.. I would try the seizure meds and I would also try setting an alarm and getting up during the night to feed her, in case they are due to low blood sugar. Did you get a chance to check her gums when this is happening? |
Sorry to hear this. I would definately start the seizure meds for her and see how that goes. Good Luck |
I am so sorry to hear this. Meds would defiantly help. Praying this it will giver her some relief. The breeder should be notified, they need to know that this is an issue. |
@ Wylie's Mom: we've had her now about 3 weeks (she is in her 12 week of age); the owners ussually let the pups go at about 8 weeks. No signs or episodes at the breeders. Vet Dr says this is something that happend over time, but ussually later, after one year. @ margaritaville: we did check, it was a greyish colour. our assumption was that her glucose fell, but with all the visists to the Vet, and they kept her over two weekends for observation (glucos curve check?), no problems with her blood sugar levels. Liver is also good. So we started to give her a finger full of honey before bed (read somehwere this works) and made sure last night she ate before bed, and put some snacks down beside her basket for incase she awakes. thanks to all for the kind words. yes, i am so deerly fond of her (suppose to be my wife's present but she highjacked my heart). Update: they started the meds yesterday, and so far so good. When she was up at 02h00 she was with me in bed, warmly snuggled. Day 2 and counting. After my post yesterday i searched around more on this site and found similar stories and the lifespan of 6+ years #thinking_positive :D |
Glad she has been started on meds. I think you are on the right track with your treatment (meds, feeding before bed and snacks available). I don't know what is available to you in S. Africa, here in the US there are products available called Nutrastat and Nutracal which raise the blood sugar. We also have honey in packets, which you might consider carrying with you when away from home. Many thing can lower blood sugar-not eating, long periods between meals (small stomachs, small size, age), exercise. Many people don't realize how much energy an active little puppy can expend. Please keep us up dated as your little one grows and please post photos. |
