Older Cat beats up my yorkie puppy Hi, I need help i have 2 older cats. The one cat stalks and beats up my 4 month old yorkie (Yogi) the other cat plays with him. they are both used to yorkies as i had 2 and last year they both got sick and i had to put them down about 7 months apart they were 15 years old and 17 years old. The cats are 13 years old and 11 years old. Ive tried Feliway plug in it helps a bit, but i want them to get along so i dont have to have my eyes on Yogi at all times. When i go out I have tall gates that keep them apart. Any Suggestions would be great Thanks Wanda |
I had a breeder tell me she had a puppy she just sold to a family that had cats, the baby was terrorized by one of the cats....they kept thinking they would "work out their issue between themselves".....the cats solution to the problem was to kill the puppy. That breeder no longer sells her puppies to people that own cats. |
You might want to employ a behaviorist since you aren't able to force cohesion out of all of them. Sometimes, though, pets (like people) just don't get along. Since you haven't had professional help and you know that the cats pick on the dog, I'd ensure I never left them alone. My cat doesn't 'pick' on my dog but he certainly does enough rough and tumble that I wouldn't trust them alone with each other. I've had my Teddy (dog) for a year and a half and my cat is 13 this year. I think supervision is a must, really. To be fair, I never leave Teddy unsupervised whether the cat is around or not.. Just too many things can happen so quickly! |
That is a toughie for sure. First I would crate my dog/pup when I go out and leave in a room sans cats. Then you just might have to play the cats are on the lower level while doggey is out playing on the u pper level --- until you can get a behaviourist in. My dear departed Maine Coone was an absolute sweetie with our pups ... but he trained all the pups up from puppyhood. I have hesitated in getting another kitten - just for the reason Judi stipulated - I won't know the personality of kitty until grown up -- And if kitty went after Razzle well then kitty would have to be re homed - and I won't enter into that kind of situation knowingly. Our pack has always eaten together - and slept in the same room as Moms and Dads - young pups crated at night - senior guard boy out at night with Karma. I wish you all the best in sorting this out. |
When I brought my kitten into a home filled with dogs, they wanted to kill each other. Of course, mine was a different scenario, but they soon worked it all out and can sleep in the same bed. Keep an eye out and watch them; consult with a behaviorist if it's out of your control. |
cat beats up on my yorkie Thanks for your imput, I noticed that they are starting to get along slowly but it is a start and NO i dont leave them alone together when im not at home my yorkie is locked in my Living area where the cat cannot get at him. As soon as I figure out how to post a picture of him I will. Wanda |
I am lucky to have a 9 year old cat who loves dogs! She has loved every dog we have had. One of our dogs tolerates her at best, but since the dog is inside and the cat is outside and the dog is always on a leash it isn't a problem. The 2 puppy (Yorkies) I just brought home went running to meet the cat outside and she put the smack down on one of the puppies and the other puppy saw that and hit the ground. The cat is only 7 lbs and the same size as my adult Yorkie. Now the puppies see the cat and approach her slowly, crouching near the ground with tails wagging and wait for her to finish the approach. If one of the puppies gets too hyper she just raises her paw and both puppies roll over to her in submission. LOL The cat would not hurt them, only put them in line. I hope the cat adjusts to the puppy. Sounds like you are doing all you can. As the puppy ages it might get better, the cat might not like the hyperness of the puppy. |
