Trimming puppies nails I have trimmed my adult dogs nails many times. However, I have never trimmed puppies nails. They are like little cat claws and are very sharp and fine. I have the dog hail clippers that are a scissor style instead of the old guillotine style. Any suggestions on trimming before I attempt this myself? I only hope to take the very tips off of them. Would it be better to use regular nail clippers since they are so tiny? I have never trimmed nails this small before. |
I have used the scissor style clippers on a tiny Yorkie. Linda (Ladyjane) has commented that cat clippers (smaller edition) work really well for her little ones. |
How old is the puppy? For young puppies I just use people finger nail and toenail clippers. When they get bigger I just use a small dog nail clipper. The most important thing is to just cut off the pointed tips. You cut at the point where the nail is starting to curve down. |
I always take to pet smart to get her nails clipped |
I just use a dremel. Sounds crazy but that's what a lot of people use. The only challenge is to get the dogs used to the sound of the dremel. |
The puppies are 10 weeks old, almost 11 now (Monday). I take Teek to Petsmart where they use the dremel. I got the quick on one of his nails and I have not tried to cut his since. His nails curled under really badly when I got him. I was trimming just the smallest amount off every other week on him. I did this for 6 weeks and that is when I got the quick on one. I took him to petsmart and they got them down quite a bit for me. I trim our bigger dogs nails regularly. I just wanted to clip the very tips off the puppies because they are growing long and are very sharp. I have a nail clipper that has a guard on the back of it so you can not even put the nail into it very far. For the puppies that is still too far, but for my big dog it is perfect and for Teek it is about right, although I have been too afraid to clip his since then. We are looking into using a dremel on all the dogs and my husband is willing to do it with me if we decide to go that route. We already have a dremel so it is getting the attachment we need for their nails. Not sure what they use on it, Sandpaper? I am just not sure and need to look into that more I guess. With 4 dogs, going to Petsmart for nails every month or so will get expensive. With just Teek it was okay. I have always trimmed the larger dog's nails with no problem. |
I've just used human regular sized nail clippers on MiMi, just cutting the sharp tips off. She doesn't care if you mess with her paws so that made it super easy. I clip them after bath time when they are softer as well. She even let's me file them so they aren't pokie lol. |
I will try to file these after I clip them. They feel like cat claws right now and sometimes they like to claw me all up. It is going to be fun trying to clip 40 tiny nails and then I have to do both big dogs too! What did I get myself into! LOL |
