Feeding I have a 11 month yorkie that is around 3 pounds currently she has three meals a day wondering if I can go to feeding her twice a day any thoughts |
I wouldnt do it.....but then, I free feed. In my mind, I see a 3# pup's tiny little stomach, getting all empty in between just 2 feedings in 24 hours....I think that is not a good thing. |
I wish I could free feed she will eat whatever food I put down until she ends up throwing up. I will continue with three feelings |
You could try one of those automatic feeder thingies if it's kind of a hassle to feed 3x a day...? |
Thanks |
I would definitely stick to 3 meals per day. I have a 3 yr old 3.5lb pup and a 2 yr old 4.5 lb pup. I free feed them but I know that they choose to eat 3 times per day. After your pup turns 1 they usually stop growing and you can get a better idea of whether or not your pup is overeating but usually older dogs are the ones that only eat 2x per day. |
I used to free feed for my new puppy, since Sunday we're on a schedule. I wasn't able to get the housetraining down when she was free fed. She gets 4 meals a day(breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner). When she reaches 8 months I'll probably change it to three meals, when she's 11/12 months 2 meals. She's fed every 4-5 hours and is completely done eating by 8:30 p.m. |
Keep her on three feedings until she's older/bigger. You could probably give slightly larger feeds twice if three is a hassle. Of course, don't make her sick to her stomach. |
I get a chuckle when I read some of the House Breaking books. "Leave the food bowl down for 20 minutes and then take it away." Addie and Raider gobble their food in about 5 seconds and then go back and forth between the bowls to make sure they didn't miss something. I think if we tried free feeding, they would both explode. We feed 3 times a day with Orijen puppy food. They are really cute before I put the bowls down. They will both sit and Raider always sits to Addie's right. Don't know how they worked that out. |
At 3 lbs I put a quarter of a cup of kibble in his bowl at 6 am and a quarter of a cup in his bowl at 5 pm regardless of if there is anything in it or not. We do a lot of treat training so he gets full on that. It's a free range type deal but he controls it. When I noticed that his bowl was constantly empty in the afternoon when I got home from work, I bumped him up to a third in the morning and at night. He still has kibble but has started leaving his dinner for much later in the evening. I go to bed and his bowl is full but empty or nearly in the am. Hope that helps! |
Thanks everyone I've decided to keep feeding three times a day she seems happy with that I feed her 1/8 of a cup at each feeding then she gets kibble as treat when working on training. If I give her any more at a feeding she ends up eating it and gets sick she thinks she wants more but her tiny tummy can't handle it |
