I was bit by someones yorkie
 

Hi not sure what to do, I was walking along my road to go pick my daughter from her group at brownies she is 8. on the way to pick her up i walked past a house about 10 doors down from mine when a door opened and 3 yorkies ran out. one ran at me as i walked past and scuttled around my feet i was on the phone at the time so didnt pay much attention to it however it bit me on the back of the calf i bent down to put my stop the thing running off from its owner and still hadnt realised it bit my leg. the woman picked it up and walked off. i got 30 yards further down the road and felt this stinging in the back of my leg to realise i had been bitten.

i had blood running down my leg and a series of puncture marks and a bruise seeming to be it main two teeth at the top and the bottom row of teeth. can clearly be seen now.

i have to go to my GP surgery for a tetanus shot tomorrow and not sure what further action i should take.

I am not really injured however my thoughts if it can get through my jeans into my calf (which is fairly big) then what can it do to my daughter or son or any other kid in the area.

i am basically asking for advice on what to do next do i report it to local authority, police or nothing?

Geez, I'm sorry you were hurt. It was pretty rude of the owner not to ask if everything was ok. I know if that happened to me I would at least go to her house and let her know exactly what happened and why. First of all the dogs shouldn't have been unleashed outside alone...Thats problem # 1, if she was outside with them, she didnt have them under her control, thats problem # 2..and the dog injured you. As cute and lovable as Yorkies are, they still dont get a pass on biting people. Your point is very well taken, you could have had a child with you who's skin is much more delicate and there could have be a more serious situation then what occured. If you incur medical bills it really shouldn't be on you to pay them. She's not a responisble owner in my opinion. If my dog/s even scratched someone, I would take immediate responsibility. She may not even be aware that she has a biter in her group. You could be preventing a much more serious event in the future.

There is a way to approach her in a non aggressive way, but if she doesn't respond the same way, I think I would send her the bill and see what happens. I've watched a lot of Judge Judy apparantly, lol.

im in the uk so no fees for the jab which if it had involved a fee she would most certainly have been paying for. I was just writing the second part as you replied sorry lol.

i have been back to see her and told her its drew blood and showed her the wound she was appologetic and advised the dog is in Obidiance training. but all three were up at the window yapping away.

my dilema though is weather to report it or not most people i have spoke to have said i should someone even said make a claim against her which to be honest i am not interested in (not a fan of claim culture) its almost certainly going to leave a scar mind

she didnt seem the most responsable when i got there and to be honest i did get the impression that she may suffer with anxiety, depression or even some learning difficulties which makes my deciscion even tougher.

I agree that maybe the best thing to do is present the owner with a bill, shot, jeans, doctor, and see what happens. IMHO it may be too late, but if you don't get a good reply to the bill you can call the local police, sheriff or animal control and see what happens. She's either unaware that the bite took place, or it's happened before and she wanted to make a quick exit. BTW, you really need to get proof the dog has been vaccinated for rabies, but unless the dog was foaming at the mouth...

As the other poster said, most owners are very responsible. If my dog even licks someone, while leashed, I always ask if they are okay.

I think i might call into the local station tomorrow to get some official advice too

Yorkie or not, I would report a dog bite to the police. There needs to be a record of the bite. Too often people don't report it, and the dog ends up biting multiple people, but there's no record of it. You're reporting it not just for you, but for the next person who gets bit.

yup just walking along the pavement they have a fance over half the garden and a open drive way as the "daughter opened the door at the same time i walked past the dogs just ran at me

Did she let them out on purpose or did they get out by accident?

If they got out by accident I can see her not asking if you were ok, she was probably too focused on getting the other 2 to notice much else.

If she let them out on purpose and continues to do so knowing one bit you I'd go to the police.

I agree to approach the owner in a gentle manner, like Fiona (MissSunni) suggested if the woman does not respond in the same manner I would send her the bill. Better yet, take the bill with you, make a copy, give that to her, then go forward from there, report the bite if she denies it was not her dog, sue in small claims court for Dr. cost.... I too am a BIG Judge Judy fan.

I was writting this message I guess at the same time you were finishing up your story. I would report the bite.

We don't have rabies in the UK, so that's not a worry. She should have these dogs under control though.

If the bite has cost OP money, then she should cover your costs. Is it possible for her to put a fence around her front door or is she straight out onto the street? If she can do the fencing, she should. If not she needs a baby gate indoors, so they can't rush out...until trained.

I would at least pursue presenting her with a bill. She has not just one, but three dogs she is responsible for controlling. Someone else could get hurt even worse next time.
My dog will bite and he has bitten. Both times he got out of the door and ran out off the porch before I could stop him. I'm thankful that there were no injuries that required medical attention, and I am embarrassed that it happened twice. I was actually depressed about the one incident for weeks and I was really ashamed and unhappy with myself.
Now the rule is that he MUST be in my arms, crated or on a leash if the front door is opened. I also put a gate across the opening in the porch rail.
Yorkies and their owners do not get a pass because they are small. Even if the injuries are not serious, no one likes getting bit, and the bite does hurt!

If the dog truly is in training, there is probably not a lot which will be done


A) due to the size of the dog
B) because dog bites are not considered extremely harmful to adults in the UK compared to cat bites and in general
C) because the owner is taking steps to reduce or eliminate the behavior


Anyway, that's my conclusion based on the site above. You may come to different conclusions following referral to the police assuming you have gone down that route.

Dang it! I was going to say that! England is the only place in the world that does not have rabies! I wanted to look like a smarty pants by know that (and not being from England).

I would report it though so that if there is another bite yours is recorded. I socialize my Yorkies so that I can literally hand them to anyone and they don't even care. That is just the way I prefer my small dogs to be. My big dog is my watch dog and more leary of people but he stays at home so that is fine. The Yorkies go everywhere that I can take them so I want social and friendly dogs that would not bark or bite anyone. Just the way I prefer to raise mine.
