Neutering Question?? I have some question about Neutering. Our 8 month old yorkie I believe has started marking the legs of our coffee table. We have had him for about 3 months and have not had any signs of marking in the house until Friday night. We have not caught him in the act just puddles around the legs of the table. We have scheduled an appointment to get him neutered for this week. I'm hoping this will help but I don't know if there is any other advice on stopping this behavior. I have also read that Neutering a puppy before he has stopped grown can affect his growth. I have searched this and read some other posts about this subject hoping this isn't repetitive to some members. Thanks |
Max did not stop marking when he was neutered. |
I'm ok with him marking just not in my house. :( |
I am changing from carpet in the family room to a porcelain floor because he still marks in the house. |
This makes me sad how old was Max when he got fixed? |
A little over a year |

Yeah, we're gonna do the same thing b/cuz of Teddy...crazy boys! |
Sasha is younger but knows how to hit the pad better. I guess girls just have better aim ! |
I think I was lucky because I neutered Scottie when he was 6 months and he had never marked indoors. He marks everywhere when I take him for walks though. I miss the days when he would actually squat like a girl and let out a full pee. |

If you catch him in the act, correct him. Not angrily, but with a firm voice. Then take him outside or to the pad. |
My six year old intact male does not mark in the house. Although when he was young and or I have a female in season - then he will try to mark - and so I supervise closely, either a crate for him or belly bands when a female is in season. He is outdoor trained. Marking and neutering there is no strong scientific evidence that shows marking is corrected by neutering. And I have to say puddles around chair legs means he is either urinating and or marking indoors. So it looks like your housebreaking is not so successful so far. Also you really need to clean the area thoroughly and with an enzymatic cleanser to oblivate the scent of urine or marking. By now it is probable his growth plates have closed - so that should not be a huge concern for neutering now. |

He never goes outside unless we are on trips or take him on walks. He uses a litter box and we have a pad around that. Sometimes he is lazy and only walks in the box 1/2 way. I didnt actually catch him but when I got home one day there was a spot around the coffee leg and I cleaned it up then left the room when I came back the spot was there again... So I then corrected him and put him in his area. |

What we see as unacceptable is just a very normal thing for dogs re: territory etc... This is why neutering may not correct the problem. The behavior is thought to be only partially attributable to hormones. The rest is behavioral and environmental. Therefore, your best chance at correction is catching Mr in the act and clapping loudly and saying NO or tethering to ensure he's not doing it unnoticed and, therefore, uncorrected. I love my boy but he is a marking fool! |
I doubt that neutering will help with the marking. If you aren't opposed to puppy pads, I read somewhere that taking a 2 liter soda bottle filled with sand and placed in the middle of a pad gives a male something to lift his leg on. Maybe try it in a corner of a washable floor?? kitchen?? I have a laundry room off my kitchen and Annie uses her pad in there. It only took me about 2 weeks to get her trained using a very small treat as a reward. |
