How do you correct your little one? I was just wondering how you all correct your furbaby when he/she has an accident in the house? I've just been saying "no no. Go outside." Then take her outside for like 5 minutes or so. |
Sounds ok to me? In addition, you can clap your hands for a startling effect and take your pup outside and when/if it does go where it's supposed to then make sure that you praise it like a lunatic!!:) |

After the fact I do nothing. If I catch her in the act I'll say, "Hey!" in a stern voice to startle her and then take her outside. My morkie is going on 7 months and by now she hardly has any accidents but I can tell when she needs to go so I take her out before she even starts to do her squat. When she does have an accident she knows it's wrong as her ears flop down in a submissive state and she'll go hide under the table. I don't blame her, it's my fault for not taking her out. Younger dogs can't hold it in well and if they need to go, they need to go. |
You're so right! I'm the same way! When I gotta go, I gotta go! Lol |
Mine are just starting potty training so really I just praise, praise and praise when they go where they are supposed to. I don't do a whole lot if they have an accident because they are just babies. I was harnessing Raksha up to take the pups outside and my 80 lb English Setter came by the baby gate and growled at her and she pee'd on my lap! LOL. I just said "I can't believe you just pee'd on me." It was Gatlin's fault, but oh well, it happens. They just got her last night so Gatlin is not used to them yet. When they know better about potty training I will just make a noise if they go in the house where they aren't supposed to (not on a pee pad) but mostly I am about praising them when they go where they are supposed to. |

I startle Scottie with a "no!", but even without saying anything afterwards, he usually senses that I'm mad/annoyed that I have to clean up his pee and he has the look of shame on his face. I think dogs can sense vibes... I usually give him a big celebratory "gooooood boy!!!!" when he pees and poops outside though. So he knows what's good and what's not. |
I've been throwing parties when she goes outside. Now after she goes she comes to me so I can rub on her and tell her how good she is! They're so smart! |
I usually use "Uh Oh" to mark an accident during training periods and "no" after the dog has learned the command and I'm convinced he knows what to do every time but is going against the rules or behavior he's been taught. For some reason I just impart more vexation or irritability in the way I say the word "No", even when I'm trying not to, so using that word during training, especially potty training, can sometimes intimidate a little guy still in the learning phase, when I want him to be totally open to the positive learning aspects of the training. Then once the dog gets it right and actually potties outside, I mark each success with an instant "Yesssss!!!", treat, smiles and praises and even the occasional happy dance! After a couple of weeks, the dog definitely knows which reaction he prefers and begins to try to figure out how to work to get the positive rewards only. |
1st day with the puppies and Raksha peed on me when Gatlin startled her. Rowan peed on the couch because my daughter wasn't watching him very closely. I asked her to take the puppies out this evening as I had just showered and was in my pj's ready for bed and she didn't. She took Raksha downstairs and put her on her bed and she peed on the bed. She put her on the floor to take the bedding off her bed and she pooped on the floor. She has a pee pad in her room, but Raksha didn't use it. I am doing good with the house training, but I have to do all of it as no one else understands them the way I do. If Teek has an accident I just clean it up. He is so good in the house and it really comes down to me not seeing him go to the door. He peed in the house the first day I had him and I just cleaned it up. Then my daughter was watching him, but was really in the bathroom putting on make up and he pooped on the floor by the kitchen door. Then he pooped on the floor one day while I was really busy helping my husband with stuff. I don't even punish him for accidents. I just praise him for going outside. I totally believe in positive reinforcement. The only time I really get on a dog is when my English Setter tries to kill our cat, I do get on him for that, but only because her life is on the line. Other than that and I yell at him loudly, I really believe positive reinforcement is the key to getting the behavior you want from the dogs. |
I am also using the positive reenforcement. She's had just a few small accidents but two were when I first brought her home and she was too quick. One second she was playing and the next squating to pee! I just said "no no. We go outside". And took her outside. The third time she peed in the house was completely my fault. I got sidetracked watching The Voice and she went. I just picked her up and took her outside. When she goes outside she comes back to me for her belly rubs and "that's a good girl"! It's too cute! So she loves the praise she receives. I've had a few dogs in my lifetime and this little girl is by far the smartest one I've ever had! I love her to pieces!!! She's just so darn lovable and cuddly. |
I still praise like crazy when 5 year old Dinky goes potty outside. I laugh at myself because I really mean it! I really appreciate that he does this. One thing I do is to take him out the minute I see him there. It seems polite considering that he goes outside rain or shine. I did use a stern "No!" during training. then I always took him outside and told him, "Potty outside!" Now I tell him, "Good boy!. Goes potty outside." Then when I bring him in, I tell DH, and DH chimes in. We do the reverse when DH takes him. |
