Someone's Fishy? Hi everyone. Big question. Well big to me anyway. Does anyone know why my little girl Tinky, smells like stinky fish when she is outdoors in warm weather? It only happens when weather starts warming up. She can be just bathed, watched closely, and comes in stinky like fish. I've asked the vet, various people, and no one has ever had an answer. Weird huh? Would love some answers to this fishy question. |
Anal glands can smell like stinky fish. Have the vet check them. |
1-some years back I had an unspayed girl that smelled fishy, turned out she had UTI. Is your baby spayed? I don't want to scare you but, 2- years back I and another girl not spayed, she smelled fishy, she was 13 y/o, I thought it was UTI like my other girl had , it turned out she had Pyometra, her uterus erupted sending puss through out her body, she died 9 days later. Just my experience with fishy smelling females. |

If the smell goes away within about 5 minutes after coming in, blame it on a type of hormone that leaves a calling card for other dogs to smell when they are outside. If the odor is present when she has been inside, I would have a vet check for anal gland problems and a UTI. |
The only experience I have ever had with a fishy smell is when my gal Miah kills a bird and than rolls around on it for days at a time. Its that smell that alerts us to the kill and than its clean up time for the bird and bath time for Miah. |
I agree with all the above suggestions. Do you know where the smell is coming from. If it the back end, possibly UTI, anal glands or cling ones. If from the front end, possibly she is a worm roller like Sissy. While the smells is not exactly fishy, it is breath taking! Her beard, face and shoulders are areas that are rank for awhile after she has been outside. |
Hi everyone. In reply to all responses on my fishy smelling girl. Thank you all! From reading them it seems likely that it could be hormones. She has been spayed, has no uti, anal glands were expressed, and she hadn't rolled in anything at these times( although she is not above rolling in some icky thing if she gets a chance , LOL). So, it looks like maybe hormones, because the smell does go away after she's been inside a little while. Thanks again. |
