I used dawn soap on my yorkie and now he has itchy skin? I read here you could use dawn to kill fleas? This is the third time I use it (diluted in water) He never had a reaction to it but now he did. He's been scratching a lot and I looked at his skin and some parts are redder than normal. He's been scratching behind his ears and theyre REALLY red. So at 1:30 am I decided to go out and get some benadryl (my vet told me I could give him 5ml every 8hrs if he has an allergy reaction) What else should I do for him? He's now sleeping and no more scratching because of the benadryl. I feel like the worst mom in the world :( Ugh I hope he wakes up tomorrow with normal skin ... |
From what I've read, Dawn can be used 'SPARINGLY', otherwise, it can dry the dogs skin out which is probably what's happened since you say that your poor dog has itchy, red skin. I'm not sure what would immediately restore the ph balance or moisturize the skin so that he has immediate relief? Have you talked to the vet about what to do apart from Benadryl? Benadryl will obviously work for an allergic reaction, assuming he's had one, but it won't do anything to moisturize the skin so I'd probably get some advice re: that. In the mean time, maybe someone on here can offer some tips? Don't feel bad... x |
I think you should ask your vet about something aside from Benadryl because that has a drying effect. It helps with itching short term. Maybe you should mix some coconut oil (a good bit) melted, into 4/5 cups of water then pour it all over...after you've wet the dog. No soap or shampoo. And massage it well into the skin and hair. Rinse well. I'd check that with the vet on this too, just to be on the safe side. |
Cooper got into a liquid air freshner and I had to call the poison control center because I was freaking out!!! They told me to wash him with dawn to get rid of the chemicals from the air freshner. He was a little itchy afterwards but I just waited a while before his next bad. His hair gets really oily without a bath so I let it get really oily to try to replenish the oil I guess lol!! But after I did that he stopped itching! |
How is he feeling today, better? |

It was probably way too harsh for his skin. I think moisturizing is the key here. I'd call the vet and ask what would be best to soothe his skin. :) |
Isn't Dawn what they use to wash the oil off animals caught in oil slicks? I would have thought it would be safe to use. |
Most of the bottles of Dawn on the store shelves today are highly concentrated. It not like the Dawn of years ago. They do still make the original, you just have to read labels carefully to find it, and its always in a very large bottle. Hope your pup is feeling some relief now the benadryl has kicked in. |

Ok so Bentley's skin is a bit better. Not so red now but kind of pink. It still itches though. So based on your advice will it be a good idea to give him a bath with his anti-itch conditioner mixed with a little of coconut oil? I also have a hypoallergenic shampoo for sensitive skin (thats the one I usually use on him). Should I use shampoo to wash away any possible dawn remains? Or just the conditioner/coconut oil) I live in florida and right now is hot and humid outside, will it be a good idea to walk him outside more often? Maybe the humidity will help his skin? Thank you so much! |

Outside walks would do him good, but avoid areas with fleas! |

We moved to an area with a lot of grass and ducks and we've been having problems with fleas since then, not bad but like I see 1 or 2 fleas on him every 3-4 months. So I used dawn during those times :-/ I just bought coconut oil and a hydrocortisone spray for the areas that are affected the most, like behind his ears :( |

Hi, I know this was posted almost a week ago but I just read it and thought I would say that it would be a good idea to use an Oatmeal Shampoo on Bentley. It calms irritated skin with moisturizing oatmeal. I use it on my Joey and it makes his hair feel so soft and silky smooth. That is the shampoo my groomer uses on all her clients. I use the one by Hartz and I like the smell of it better though. Just a thought. |
