Allergies and Benadryl My dog appears to have seasonal allergies... It may be the new food he is eating too... Typical itchy red skin under the chin and belly... And very itchy...does anyone use Benadryl for their dogs?? He needs immediate relief while I wean him off the food. |
Cooper has a little bit of allergies and our vet told us that we could use children's benadryl, which would help with immediate relief!!! I hope this helps a lil bit :) |
Our bully has seasonal/newspaper ink allergies. We do use Benadryl during the onset of spring when pollen is really bad, it was recommended by her breeder. |
Our vet also gave the green light for childrens Benadryl. |
Food allergies are rare more then likely in environmental allergies. I would go to your vet asap because they can give you medicine that will help. Benadryl has to be given multiple times a day to work and even then you should never give them any medicines without first talking to your vet. Also as far as I have been told if it is a food allergy Benadryl isn't going to help. |
Thanks everyone! He does have a grain and chicken allergy which took me years to figure out through eliminating different ingredients in his food. He would get itchy from that but never the redness like he's experiencing now. I have an appt set up for him tomorrow and the vet gave the go ahead for the children's Benadryl for today. |

Usually, Benadryl does not work well at all for allergy relief in dogs, but you could try. It has a very short half-life, so you have to give it 4x a day for it to be continuously effective and therapeutic. Better OTC options for dogs are Zyrtec or Claritin, which are 24 hour pills. Our vet suggests 1/2 adult benadryl 2 times per day for allergies. We have an older dog who has to stay on steroids because his allergies are so bad, I don't recommend that necessarily. I wrap the benadryl in kraft cheese slices and they gulp it right down :) |
