Steps
 
Ok, got my 16 week old male Yorkie to go up his pet steps, but once on couch takes a flying leap off. I show him the correct decent but he seems obvious.
Got any ideas?

Put big cushions on the floor on both sides of the steps for a softer landing:) Have you tried luring her down each step with treats? She only gets the treat if she uses the steps to come down.

Piper will fly off most anything; she only uses an "assist" when getting up on something--like the bed. It's a concern, but she's so fast and she leaps off and dashes off in one fell swoop and so far, so good. I got her at 3yrs and she just turned 4--I'm not making excuses, but she's kinda set in her ways insofar as the jumping thaang (again, read: fast and determined!). I'm sure you'll be able to convince your little leaper to use the assists you've provided--consistency and patience, yes?!

I have a suggestion, get rid of the steps and only allow him on things he can safely get down from. You have the perfect chance to train him while he is young. There are a few pups that will climb down the steps but most do not and there have been lots of threads about it on here and also lots of pups that have needed surgery at a young age from doing just what your pup is doing flying off the couch or bed, in fact one of my facebook friends had a yorkie recently die from jumping off the couch. keep plenty of beds around and only allow your pup up on the couch or bed when you are there honestly its the safest for them. Do a search on threads posted by me you sill see the latest discussion about steps

How about trying out a ramp instead? M would do the same thing.. Use the steps to go up but jumps down. But since I've replaced it with a ramp, both M/Z have been using it to go up/down.

As DBlain said, there's been discussions on this topic not too long ago so if you do a search, I think you'd be able to find more info.

Can you post a pic of the ramp? Or a link to where you bought it? Sasha goes up the steps but jumps down too.

I was too cheap to buy a ramp so I made it. :D But other than money, I wanted it to be at specific height and length. Below is the link to my original post. You can see the picture of the ramp I made on page 2. I also took a short video with Zoey using the ramp on page 3.
