It does mean different things for different people.
My thing is basically, what the heck is wrong with being a dog! So when I hear someone say, "He's more than a dog", I know the person means the dog is part of the family, or that the relationship is close and special.
For me "dog" is more than adequate to sum it up.
I will say that when it comes to my kids and my dog, everyone gets medical care and attention and love, but I would give my life for my kids. Does that mean that my kids have more "status"? If it means that, then they do.

Some people say "it's just a dog" and that indicates to me that they think they are a lower species. I fawn all over my dogs, lol. I love them because they are dogs...I enjoy playing with them, teaching them, and snuggling with them. I put bows in Sunni's hair and in the winter I dressed her. Not so much in the nice weather but she's always got some bling on, lol. And I bring her everywhere I can. My stepdad said..."So, you know she's a dog right?" I looked at him and said, "She is?" omg, she is? really? and here I was thinking I adopted a child! haha.

My dogs are part of my family. I dont "think" they are human in anyway. I do love being around other "dog" people:)

And lets face it..my dogs love me when I'm happy, sad, mad, ugly, tired, fun, busy...My little George could read my moods better then any human being ever could. And trust me, thats quite a task! He was beyond human....the best part of dogs is that they have the pure love only dogs have.

Good subject. Can you explain more what it means to you?

I let my Yorkies do all the typical dog things, but I also talk to them pretty much like I talk to a human. I don't limit my speech to commands, which some people would disagree with. The dogs understand. They understand too much. I can't even talk to my dad about groceries we need without the dogs getting excited that they will go for a car ride to the store. :D

The dogs steal my pillows and blankets in bed, but they know to leave me alone to eat my meals. We have boundaries.

If I'm taking her to the vet, I'm fully explaining to her why we are going. When I'm doing housework and she's following me around everywhere, I talk to her. "How was your day, Tink - Oh my goodness, that's so interesting." ...My boyfriend often thinks I'm crazy, but hey, she's my little buddy. :D

Couldn't have said it better myself. My Zeus is not a show dog, so it doesn't matter. I sing to him -- really make up songs for him. His nickname is Toot Toot. I sing to the tune of Little Duece Coup by the Beach Boys -- He's my little Toot Toot, and I love him, he's my little Toot Toot. We are crazy about him. We realize he is a dog, but we try not to leave him home alone for too long except when we work. He goes everywhere he can with us. He is part of our family. He is our first pet. He is so happy to see me when I get home. It is the best feeling in the world as a human -- feeling needed and wanted. My Zeus makes me feel that way, and I would never want to change it.

OK..now I'll out myself too, lol. I sing to Sunni...You are the "Sunshine of my Life", Sunshine came walking thru my window today (I cant remember the name of that one)...you get the gist:) If the word Sun is in a song and I remember it..its the song of the day, lol

MissSunni, I know I've become nutty as a fruitcake about Zeus, and I don't care. I love that furbaby so much. I talk to him all the time, too, as he is the only one who listens to what I say. My 14 year old and my husband tune me out!!

I think to really understand your dog you have to spend three times the amount of time - just watching your dog - his movements - learn his different speaking barks, whines and cries - so twice the amount of time listening - and then intelligent touch. Learn your dogs muscles and bones through touch and sight. Finally learn *what* works for your dog - the commands - the exercises - the food etc etc etc.


And gosh I certainly don't want my dog to be human - their dogginess is why I love them so very much.


And I totally agree with what that show woman said to remember to let your dog just be a dog.

:thumbup::thumbup: :D Very good point about vet visits. I tell my boys too why were are going, and if I have to leave them, I assure them that I will be back. I believe it helps a lot. It's the only place Teddy tolerates people poking and prodding him. :)

I treat my dogs like dogs. Because they are dogs. They are happier ime. Otherwise they fight to be the leader and always have an aggressive or nervous behavior....They ask for permission. The train easier. At the sametime they have fun/ Play. Have noce cloths for warms. Not to look like a baby. Go for walks and are train not to bark at anything that walks. IME a well trained dog is happy dog and is a dog. You can train a baby dog baby...They will rule and not be happy. imo
