Should I Withhold Food So since yesterday morning Sammie has had excessive stool and at the end it is loose. He does not have full diarhea. Just lots of stool and then the last two are real soft. In one sitting he could have 6 stools. Should I withhold food? He is not acting sick and wants to eat. Thanks |
Personally, I never withhold food, even w/ GI upsets...bc it always seems to be a dog's tummy tends to know whether or not it feels like eating. I'd still feed if it were me. |
Thanks Wylies mom. I did change his food but that was two weeks ago so I would think it would happen right away. |
I would feed her maybe go to rice and boiled chicken. These little guys can go down fast maybe a trip to the vet? They also say pumpkin can help bring the stood back to normal. Hope your baby feels better soon. |
I wouldn't withhold food. You can add about a tbs of canned pumpkin to his food but if he's not better by tomorrow morning I would be calling the vet for an appointment. If you haven't changed anything in the past few day (you said 2 weeks ago with a food change) having a change in poop habits would be of concern. If you are going to try adding a little pumpkin it needs to be Canned PACKED Pumpkin. Not the type that is for pie filling. It's pretty cheap around $2 for a can and you can always freeze any left overs for use later. |
I withhold a meal with GI upsets. |

If it was me, and there is no reason, no currant food change over, nothing new like treats were given I would be at my vet with pup. But that is just me. You can try boiled boneless chicken cutlets mixed in with boiled rice. this will bind his stools (hopefully) I would NOT with hold food. I have not had the need to use the pumpkin, but members that advise it do so because they have. What ever you choose, if your baby still has loose poop, I would take a sample of the poop and get pup to vet ASAP. |
The reason I withhold a meal when a dog is sick is because continuing to feed if the dog has a problem such as pancreatitis will make it worse. I find that chicken and rice doesn't always cure diarrhea, and higher fiber can be better (ie sweet potato). I don't run to the vet over one loose stool if my dog is acting fine. I just skip a meal and things usually resolve quickly. |
Boiled rice has no fiber in it at all, unless its brown rice. |
I think I would bring a stool sample in and also ask your vet. Susan |
How's he doing today and what was he eating before. I probably wouldn't withhold food unless my vet told me too. The only real symptom is a little soft and that could be normal. Are you feeding things besides dog food? Excessive stool can mean there's something in the food that he can't digest, not always a bad thing, but you should be aware of this. For example, if you gave him a bunch of green beans this could happen. |
I did not withhold food. He did not get any treats the last few days. Last night still a little soft and now today he has not gone yet. So I am giving him some pumpkin and see if that helps. |

I did do a food change but that was two weeks ago. I would think it would show up before now. He also gets into the cat food sometimes so that might of happened. |

From my experience, even if it's not liquid diarrhea, it's still an upset stomach. Excessive stool is mild upset stomach. In my opinion, I think the stomach is not liking what he's eating so it's excreting it ASAP instead of absorbing it all. Good food yields small and less poop. Bad food (if stomach doesn't like it), yields lots of poop. |
OH and also, I was told by my trainer, who is supposedly very knowledgeable and was friends with the late Dr Sophia Yin, to not feed white rice. I forgot the reason..even though I know the internet suggests rice and boiled chicken everywhere. But she was appalled by the idea of white rice and suggested plain oatmeal instead. I just took her word for it and used plain oatmeal (mixed with warm water and cooled down before serving), boiled chicken, plain yogurt, and plain canned pumpkin. |

I have always fed oatmeal to a dog that has had a stomach issue. I make a great big pot of it and then scoop out some for the dogs, they think it is a great treat! Then I fix up the rest of the pot of oatmeal for my family with brown sugar or cinnamon or maple syrup or whatever i want in ours. I let the dogs cool to a reasonable temperature where they will not be burned, usually about the time we are finished eating. They love it! I usually feed them this for a day and then try them back on their dog food and see how they do. This plain oatmeal was highly recommended by my vet, several actually for a dog I had that had constant stomach issues. |

Brewers' rice is the small milled fragments of rice kernels that have been separated from the larger kernels of milled rice. (AAFCO definition).[1] Brewers' rice is a processed rice product that is missing many of the nutrients contained in whole ground rice and brown rice thus reducing the quality[2] Quote:
Brewers rice offers mainly calories which are indeed important, but I don't believe "empty" calories are beneficial. |

I'm talking about real rice eaters. If you don't know what that is then your aren't one |
You can research yourself. But Asians who have a high staple of white rice from Asia usually don't sufferer from Diabetes. But its the combinations of the unhealthy "American" diet with alot of white rice. American have the worst eating habits. When I was growing up there would only be one over weight kid in class. And you notice them Now a healthy skinny kid stands out. All the kids are over weight. |
