Raising Bailey's food bowl? From early on, Bailey (3yo) has taken his kibble out of his bowl, one by one, and then eats it; sometimes crunching and other times just swallowing. How does your furrbaby eat? My vet has suggested raising Bailey's bowl, to hopefully circumvent any future problems with his trachea. Does anyone have any comments/experience regarding this? I would have to train him to stay at his bowl, or it would all be for not because of his current eating regime. I was planning on putting him on a leash to keep him there. No free feeding til he learns this way. First though, I would like to know from you all, as this is my first Yorkie. Thanks so much! |
:) Well, we had to raise our Labrador's food bowl...but that was because she had megaesophagus (I'm sure I've spelt that wrong, sorry! :rolleyes:). With Harry, he tends to eat his kibble the same way your little one does - either crunching or rolling pieces on the floor first or just wolfing it down, the way your Bailey does.... I'm not sure that any of this is a problem - Harry's vet knows how he eats and has never suggested that we should change it.... I'm so sorry that I can't help - but I'm sure someone will!!! :) Good luck! |
Every terrier I have ever owned eats their food one piece at a time! Teek goes and gets a piece from the other side of this crate and brings it into the living room and eats it and then goes and gets another piece. I don't worry about it as I have had a fox terrier and scottish terrier that also ate this way. Teek just likes to enjoy his food one piece at a time. |
Max and Sasha re the same way - one at a time. And they won't eat unless we are home. The treats we give then are slightly crunchy and they both take one and lift their head up high to chew them. Cracks me up! |
I have Blazer's food dish elevated and it doesn't make a difference, he takes his kibble out a piece or two at a time, drops them on the floor, then crunches them up. Every once in. While when I tell him to "eat over your plate!" He listens, for one kibble, then it's back to dropping them on the floor. |
I wish my babies would eat their food one piece at a time. I have three dogs and by the time I get around to feeding the third dog and putting away the food, my two yorkies are finished! They swallow their food whole. It takes them between 15-30 seconds to finish their allotted food. I have tried putting plastic keys, rubber bones (as per breeder) and the thing they sell that is supposed to make them eat slower. Nothing has worked. Up until two weeks ago, Elliot ate her food one piece at a time and crunched it. Then two weeks ago, she started gobbling her food whole. I don't know how to get them to eat it one piece at a time. I would think they would enjoy it more and feel fuller if they eat it more slowly and chew it. |
I would use a slow bowl. |

Wigglewomyn, A slow bowl is a specially made food bowl that has dividers all through it to keep the food separated so that the dog cannot get to it fast. Just go online and google slow bowl and it will come up with the bowl and then you can see what is offered and if you think it would help since you already bought things to put in the bowl that you said did not help. |
Sparkle has a raised bowl. Before I sit it down for her to eat it I make her sit and stay so she isn't clawing my hand for her food. For the most part she doesn't take the food out of the bowl |
I would elevate the bowl too. |

Apologies for not replying earlier, but went to the States for a few days, returned and back to work. My time flys!! Thanks to all who submitted comments. The way I was told to train him was to put a leash on him and be by his bowl every time he ate and over time he would get used to it. I'm not exactly sure why this would help though, as his kibble is already small. Any thoughts on this? Oh, and my Bailey burps after every feeding. Is he the only one out there? It's quite a cute burp, if there is was such a thing as that:) |
Apologies for my tardiness. I was in the States for a few days, then back to work. My time flys! I was told the way to train Bailey was to put something under his food bowl, then a leash on him and stand with him at his bowl to make sure he wouldn't take the food away to eat it off of the ground. In time he would learn the new behavior. Has anyone tried that? Funny thing, Bailey burps after each feeding. I do have to say that it is a cute burp, if there ever was one:) Anyone elses YT do that? |
