cotton coat yorkie Hi all, I have a 10 mth old fluffy little man, his coat is very thick therefore hard to manage sometimes especially if he gets it tangled. He is going to the groomers tomorrow to have most of it cut to a shorter length as the weather is getting warmer here in the UK. My question is there any particular brush/comb I could use to make things easier? I have used the typical soft brushes, a metal one and bought a human hair brush that seems a bit better. Also my groomer suggested I use conditioner in a spray bottle but I'm unsure what kind of conditioner to use, is there a dog one? Lisa x |
Hiya, I use a 'ball pin slicker' like this one: Ball Pin Slicker | Pets At Home In addition to a double sided comb like this one: Double Sided Comb | Pets At Home The comb gets right down to the skin and the brush helps maintain between combings by getting to the skin but not burning the skin due to the ball cap coverings. I did actually buy both of these products at Pets At Home and the brush, in particular, is wonderful for my cotton coated boy. As far as conditioners, I have not found a human or dog conditioner which proved to be useful if you are looking to prevent matts. A cut which reduces the length AND thickness with maintenance combing and brushing every other day seems to be the best strategy for us. Hope that helps! |
I like using a buttercomb on tougher coats - it seems to work well. |
Wylies mom, I saw you mention a butter comb before, but have no idea what they are:) Someone recently asked a similar question regarding mats, and recommended Isle of Dogs products. I ordered the silky coating brush spray (Jasmine & Vanilla) from Amazon, and I have to say I totally love it. There are so many different products to choose from. I just wanted something to use between baths and this product is perfect. It has a nice smell. A little bit strong the first day, but its much lighter the next day. |
Cowboy Magic is a silicone-based conditioner that contains no water. It works wonders for Bella's mats. It's rather expensive, but a little bit goes a long way. Here is a Yorkietalk thread on this subject: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...boy-magic.html Here is the link to the product website: Cowboy Magic Grooming Products Cowboy MagicŪ Detangler & Shine |

So far the things that are working are dampening the coat, dog detangler, and the tangle teezer brush. I'm going to try a conditioner today. My pup has a lot of hair also it's pretty strait with a thick under coat. I also will have it cut shorter for the summer. Good luck. |
1 Attachment(s) I also have the cotton coat lill guy.. i was going to have him shaved down to get rid of matts under his hair near skin..then in another thread the Tangle Teezer brush from Great Britain is a miracle! they sell them on Amazon for about 10$ US.. My last little girl Chanel had a silky coat and virtually no "undercoat" but I bought a brush at Walgreens tha was oval shaped with a little cord you stick your hand through that has short plastic bristles. It looks VERY much like the tangle teaser featured above- but it was only a dollar. I bought it for my little girl because it is very small and I could keep it in y purse for when I took her harness off ( she was always tangled after walks and or wearing an kind of clothing) But My new little girl Roxie has a "Cotton coat" though I have never heard it called that befoe ( learn something new on yorkie talk every day! LOL) and she is very prone to matts right next to her skin. She HATES being brushed but that little flat brush is the only one she will tolerate without freaking out. I have learned to get up feed her and wear her little puppy tail out playing-then I spray her with a doggie detangler I got from target and brush every morning. If I let a few days go ( which I did a time or two because I didn't think a puppys short coat could be so tangled)- she will have painful snarls and I want brushing to be pleasurable for her. I wait until she is sleepy and groggy and ready for her morning nap -then I spray her and pet her to allow the detangler to soak in. Then I gently start brushing her. She seems to accept it better than if I just get her while she is alert and ready to play. Oh and the detangler smells like baby powder :) So Sweet! if y'all are interested I can try to get a picture and post of the brush I am talking about..I have seen them at Walgreens and CVS in little buckets where the travel brushes are, usually right under the regular brush display |
