Prozac for dogs? Been a while since I posted anything. My little girl, Tinkerbell, is doing a little better. She hasn't had any more seizures. But, she has some new issues going on. She is 10 yrs. old now and seems to be exhibiting some senior dog behavior. She acts overly anxious in the evenings, before bedtime. She doesn't seem to know which bedroom she wants to sleep in, so therefore starts looking anxious and she'll go to one room, only to quickly exit and go to another room. By the way, in the past, she always slept in my bed, she NEVER slept anywhere else. So this is new behavior for her. If I put her on my bed she will look around, start pacing, licking her lips, yawning, then she'll jump down and go to my daughters room. She might stay there for a few hours at most then she wanders a bit. She seems a little confused as to where she should be. So, I took her to the vet yesterday, relayed all this info. To him and asked what could be done. He prescribed. Fluoxetine. This was confusing to me and I looked it up and really don't know what to think of this! It says never give to dogs who've had any seizure activity in the past, which she has. My question is, do any of you give your sweet baby dog this med. and what condition was it for?? I haven't given her any yet. I'd sure appreciate any advice someone could offer me. I was thinking she needed an anti anxiety med. but not this one. She pants very heavily too, when these things occur. |
I believe Fluoxetine is also prescribed for anti-anxiety. Is Tinkerbell currently on seizure medication? Perhaps you should call the vet and voice your concern. Otherwise, I'd say get a 2nd opinion. |
Thank you Magnus for your reply and advice. No Tinky is not on anti seizure medication. I would like a second opinion, but not so sure that's an option right now, because of the cost.. Hoping for some more ideas or advice from people here at YorkieTalk. I do appreciate you though and may end up having to do what you suggested. |
Awww, your poor kiddo...it's tough to see them age like this. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to try the Prozac - it can be super helpful for many dogs...and if it helps your kiddo, it'd be SO worth it. Another med to talk to your vet about is Anipryl - it is used in dogs w/ dementia / aging - and can be tremendous. |
Thank you so much Wylie's mom. That was very helpful and encouraging! Tinky is such a great dog and most of the time she's her playful, loving self, but then the subtle changes.... Thanks again. |
Please watch her closely. There may be an underlying condition causeing the anxiety. My Yorkie was 5 years and started acting confused and anxiety. Did the bedroom thing too. He was diagnosed with a brain disorder. Please not to say this could happen to your baby. But watch, listin, feel. Anything different please consider a specialist. Good luck. Hope she's just showing some age. |
Thanks for your concern Shicks. I am certainly watching her very closely and also hope it's just her age. In answer to someone else's question, no Tinky is not on any anti seizure medications. I still haven't started the Prozac yet. Still reading, questioning and listening to others great advice, weighing it all out, you know. |
I know when my dog got dementia there was a great pill out that helps with it. I did not put him on it because he had other health issues and I had to put him down. But I have heard good things about the dementia pill. I forgot the name of it though |
