Dr. Remillard. THIS is how you do it. In doing research on canine nutrition for the other threads on the Nutriscan test, I came across a blockbuster article coauthored by Dr. Rebecca Remillard titled "Handling Alternative Dietary Requests from Pet Owners." Here is the full citation: Parr, JM and Remillard, RL. 2014. Handling Alternative Dietary Requests from Pet Owners. Vet Clin Small Anim 44:667–688. The link to the article is here, but it's probably behind a paywall for most people: Handling Alternative Dietary Requests from Pet Owners The article is about how conventional veterinarians can assess alternative diets (non-kibble or non-canned foods, or brands they haven't worked with) to determine whether they are nutritionally complete. The article provides web resources for both the lay person and for the veterinary professional on sound pet nutrition. I highly recommend this article as an introduction to canine nutrition and how to evaluate your dog's diet, whether you are feeding them kibble, canned, raw, or home cooked. |
Thanks for posting this! I've been a client of Dr Remillard's since about 2009 and she's made diets for all my dogs. She's never had the same approach and treats each as an individual. I have had her help me in so many ways, I'm forever grateful, and I hope the info in her article helps others. I think she is right that many veterinarians are holding fast and furious to commercial kibble diets and some owners just don't want that. Nothing has irritated me more than one young vet shoving a bag of dog food in my face on a number of occasions when I kept saying I don't want that food- I'm a home cooker. He eventually came around, and was educable as to the possible options, but he didn't do much for the vet-client relationship. |
