Who needs a Stairmaster when you have a Yorkie! So, Sunni has mastered going UP all the stairs..and gets stuck at the top. I've taught her to go down, but she only goes down if I go up and put her on the top step and stand behind her, lol…..uh, its 9 am, I've been up since 4:45 and up and down the stairs at least 20 times so far. Baby gate? ha..she mastered pulling it down…barricade the gate with a heavy object? nope…she can still wiggle her way in to pull the gate far enough to squeeze in. I'd love to know what she's thinking, because she knows once she's up, she's afraid to come down alone, lol. The similarity between her and a human toddler is scary. Apparantly my neices baby is doing the same thing, haha. The whole tether idea is becoming more real as this day goes on! Thank goodness we have puppy training tonight. |
Haha I'm learning from my puppy that yorkies are very smart and mischievous. That's some good exercise though! |
My 14 week puppy goes up my stairs like there's no tomorrow, in a flash! But, can't come down. My husband said he should try & come down by himself. Well, he mastered 3 and plopped down the rest and landed on his head. He's ok, but the 3 foot high baby gate stays there. We also have more steps going down to the lower level. Baby gate there too. Wow! It's very tiring. |
Do your steps/stairs have carpet or something that has traction? |
Yes, the stairs are carpeted. I have watched her go down at least 25 times today, no exaggeration..she will do it without a falter, as long as I am right behind her telling her how smart she is, lol. If I go downstairs (3 story house) she looks for me by going UP the other flight of stairs. Then just sits on the landing until I come up. I actually took the gates away because I was afraid it would be too dangerous at this point to leave them, since she's able to push/pull or climb them..falling from that at the top of the stairs would be the worst. Thats why I'm actually teaching her how to go down. I even put her toys on a step for incentive. She's not a tiny little puppy. Last week she weighed 10 lbs..I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if she gained weight!! She's also got longer legs then my Shih Tzu's did and they always ran up and down. She'll get it. Meanwhile, I'm skipping my regularly scheduled workout, haha..except for puppy walks:) Have a great day!! |
My Piper has done wonders for me physically, mentally, and emotionally. She insists on pretty much daily walks; keeps me social with shopping trips; and makes me laugh out loud every single day (several times over). I thought I was just getting a little companion...Who knew I was getting a work-out coach, therapist, and comedian in the deal?! They keep us honest, don't they?!!! |

Hopefully Sunni will get her courage up soon and she will be flying up and down the stairs on her own. |
Try standing at the bottom with a treat to see if she will come down on her own. Once she does that a couple of time she will realize she does not need mommy standing behind her. |
LOL - Hand in there! I don't even have stairs and my Tibbe also killed me the first few weeks I had him!!! Honestly wondered if I could hold up to it! Best breed for keeping us up and about and don't take "no" for an answer! |
I had to hold over the stairs and sort of guide him as he walked down. He can get down, but he often waits for a free ride down from me. |
This dog is hysterical! Yes she really does keep me on my toes, and makes me laugh when I'm just about ready to scream, lol. Max, thats a great idea, she is very treat motivated. I will try that!! We just got home from puppy class and she is exhausted, haha. There's a Westie in the class about a month older who just won't respond to come or here, no matter what they all try. Sunni, is great at it, so the parents of the Westie jokingly said..we should tie their dog to Sunni…..next thing I know…thats what they did, haha…Sunni comes every time like her life depends on it…and there was poor Riley running behind her or she'd be dragged. Riley's dad took a video, if I get it I'll post it. Its pretty funny, because Sunni is much smaller, but the video makes her look like a fierce athlete, haha. No animals were harmed, I promise..it was a game they both loved…and, Riley now responds to come (to me, haha) |
Wall-e is the same way, he'll go up stairs but not down. We live on the top floor of our apartment building. I told my husband if he ever gets out we know he won't get far - probably be stuck on our floor since he won't try the stairs down! :p |
