Removing Hair Mats Help, Please. I brush every day but Buster still gets these tiny knots in the undercoat. He's only 4 months and I'm still getting him used combs and brushes which he hates. Knowing all you smart ladies, there must be something to help. I don't want to pull to hard and ruin all the progress I've made! Thanks. |
I would try a small soft slicker brush. I have a dog who has a cottony coat and mats easily and this is the only way I can brush him out. He's brushed twice a day and combed afterward but he mats easily. I keep him short too. |
I use a fine comb and hold the hair like you would a little girls when trying to get knots out. Something else I've used and seems to help is detangling spray by Topnot..its the only one they had at Petsmart. I squirt it on the knot and then just rub the knot between my fingers to loosen it up. Seems to work. I haven't had this problem really with Sunni, but with my Shih Tzu's between groomings, under armpits (if thats what you call them on dogs, lol) Worst case scenario is get little snub nosed scissors and try to just cut the little mat out. I may be doing it all wrong, but thats how I do it:) |
I've found that a little bit of Cowboy Magic worked into the matt helps to get mats out. Just work slowly holding the mat close to the body so it doesn't pull skin and start combing on the end of the hair working toward the body. Only work on this for short periods of time with lots of praise. You can also add a little coconut oil or mist with a little water before brushing. You shouldn't brush their coat when it's dry as it damages it. |
No matter how much you comb and brush this will happen. I've been the sole groomer of my babies for almost 13 yrs now and I think I have it mastered at this point. I decided to post my techniques for others to see and use. Please feel free to check out my grooming page on my web site. www.dawnsyorkies.weebly.com/grooming |
I use a buttercomb type deal on mats and it helps a lot. Also, check out the tangle teaser on Amazon - awesome brush!! And cheap! |
That was very helpful Dawn:) The only thing I would rather do on Sunni, is leave the hair on the outsides. She has big ears that don't fit her face (yet) and they look better with hair on the…They were standing up when I got her at about 9 - 10 weeks old. I do leave the nails to a pro. Tried it on another dog once, and it was a nightmare. I was terrified of cutting the quick..and I did! First and last attempt at that. |

Good glad that I was able to help.. Its not how everyone grooms their babies its just what I have found that works best for me. Adjust how you see fit and good luck. :D |
I use Isle of Dogs silky coating brush spray. It smells wonderful and works great on tangles. It also leaves her coat shiny😊 |
You've got a puppy and may be transitioning from puppy coat to adult. So you'll get a few mats every so often. I use a rat tail comb, conditioner and rub the mats with my fingers to get them out. Takes some time but it helps. |
I have gotten this detangling spray by GNC and it smells good and it worked good on some mats that Cooper got!!! Hope this can help :):) GNC Pets® Detangling Conditioner Dog Spray | Shampoo & Conditioner | PetSmart |
