Bathroom stay
 
I wrote yesterday about my 13 week old Yorkie climbed out of his x pen. Well, so much for that.
Today I had to be gone 1 1/2 hours. I put him in the master bathroom with toys, treats, etc. and put a large baby gate at the door, ( didn't want to close the door for him to scratch)
I taped cardboard over the fence holes about 18 inches down. He could still see through the bottom.
Set my video recorder and left. I was so nervous the time I was gone.
Got back and Wow! He was still in the bathroom!
My recorder showed him trying with all his power to get out. His arms could reach the cardboard, but couldn't get enough traction.
Have to do the same tomorrow, wish me luck
I just want to keep him safe.
Thanks to all of you who replied yesterday. Great advice. Thank you Magus for sending the link for another kind of x pen. I ordered it yesterday.

I am so glad you shared that with us! I am getting ready to order a pen for the puppies we are getting at the end of next month. I am now looking at how easily they might be able to climb it! LOL

Something I actually never thought of before reading about yours getting out.

I have a pen like the one that Magnus sent the link for yesterday and my puppy Duncan loves it. I have put him in it since I got him and have never had any trouble with him staying in it. The only 'problem' I have with it is when I come in the door (I come in the kitchen door and the pen is in the living room), Duncan gets so excited, that he starts jumping in the pen and he moves the pen across the living room floor (it is hardwoods. If you have carpet, maybe it wouldn't move as much). But he stays in it and it doesn't open or come unzipped.

Maybe you can put some floor grippers on the bottom of the pen? Something like this:

Oh my goodness, I was afraid the pen would scoot across the floor! I have tile floors - o crap. My little one won't be still for anything. When I looked at the video he's jumping running crying and who knows what else. Please everyone give me some ideas to keep in secured to the floor.
Some Yorkies are more freaked out than others. My first didn't have a problem staying in his x pen ( which is just a fence in a circle) like yours doesn't.

Thanks Magnus, but I wasn't going to use the bottom of the pen for reasons of soiling, until he is fulling pee trained. The product looked like it would have to be sized same as pen.
Wonder what else is out there I could secure just the bottom circle??

Be careful. He still may find a way. When Lexi first learned to climb the gates, I hit glued posterboard on each one so she had no way to climb it, but a few days later she learned she could jump up and grab onto the top of the gate to climb over. And these are 3 feet high gates, and she's less than 5 pounds, even less back then. These little stinkers are very agile.

Wow! My gate is also 3 feet high. Did your baby use her teeth to grab hold of wood on top?
I have cardboard on mine also. It seems they could not get enough traction on the boards to climb or jump close enough to grab hold.
Wow these little stinkers try our patients. We just want them to be safe when we have to be away.

We actually watched her do it. She just ran jumped and with her paws latched onto the top of the gate, pulled herself over. I couldn't believe how easily she was able to do it. We gave her the nickname "American Ninja Puppy" like from that show American Ninja Warrior because she could make the craziest jumps and climbs. I should take a picture of the setup I have now, it looks ridiculous, but we finally found a way to keep her from escaping.

I saw there were tabs for valcro for the sides. Perhaps you can ducktape it down onto the floor since it'll be temporary? The only other option I can think of is to put heavy objects on at least 4 out of 8 sides so it can't be moved around from inside.

Krueger I would love to see a picture. May give me some ideas.

When I have to be gone I also use the master bathroom. Although we use the room as it was intended, it has become Mia's personl den. She has her bed, a food and water dish, and toys. I have noted scratches on the door. She gets a little hysterical when she knows I am leaving. I am hopeful she settles down quickly but I don't have a camera so don't know for sure. She has never once went potty in her den and she even goes there on her own during the day if she wants a nap. I feel it is an ideal situation for us. No xpen needed.

Thanks Magnus, my husband said we are going to use the floor part of the "tent" so I'm going to try & find some rug rippers big enough to fit the bottom. I haven't received the pen yet, so another bathroom stay today. My recorder showed him going crazy for at least an hour. I hate that so much. When we get the " tent" then we'll be back to square 1 Ugh.

May sound a little strange, but always make sure the toilet seat is "down" when he's in there alone!
