first time owner Hello community, I am a first time yorkie owner and have some questions. My pup got neutured and since he barks more, doesn't come all the time when called. Is that normal? I also want to know is it hard to train him to be outside without a leash? Should I wait until he is a year old? |
He is a pup so I'm sure he is just coming into his personality and that is why it seems like he changed after being neutered. Unless there is a fence he should never ever be outside with out a leash. Small dogs are prey for many animals, they can get hurt by a big dog who suddenly comes along, a person could come along and steal them and they could run after something and get lost or hit by a car. |
I always recommend a book, "Yorkies For Dummies"....it is a great book that will help you TONS with tips and hints and what you can expect.... Yorkies have a very strong prey drive and will chase squirrels, cats, other dogs, ....they will bolt and run and I would NEVER trust training to over ride prey instinct.....an unleashed yorkie running unrestrained in public, is a disaster waiting to happen....if he bolts after another animal, if another dog attacks him, if he bolts into the street, if someone comes along and scoops him up and steals him, coyotes, bob cats, foxes, predator birds....you are taking a HUGE chance doing this.... |

Thank you I appreciate all the feedback. I will not take hI'm off the leash outside. Where I live there aren't any fences. I still wonder why he doesn't come when called sometimes. |
Yorkies can be incredibly stubborn and difficult to work with. It's totally worth it, of course! |
