I just got my Tiger last Thanksgiving and he has gained 1.5 pounds since then. I only feed him twice a day and yet he keeps growing. I got him when he was 2 pounds at 8 weeks and he will be 15 weeks tomorrow. His dad is only 4 lbs and his mom 6lbs. but with the rate he's going, he most likely will be bigger. I too would like to know what is the right amount to feed a puppy???? I do know that my Tiger though is pretty active and playful so he must be fine with the daily amount of food I give him . . . |
As far as growing goes, they are all different. Some gain a lot until 6 months and then STOP. Others (mine) keep adding an oz. here and there. It sounds like your dog will be within the standard and perhaps 6+ lbs. Maybe not. My friend's Yorkie was over 3 lbs. at 13 weeks, kept growing until 6 months and suddenly stopped at just over 5lbs. As far as feeding, IMO it's more about what they are eating. It should be a good quality dry food. If they are picky leave it out all day (free feed) if they are piggies give them the amount it says on the bag. Under 5-6 months they should still be eating 3x a day. |
Well..he is picky about the dry food and that is out all day for him to nibble..mostly..he plays in it. I feed him wet food 2x a day in the morning and at dinner time. Sometimes he eats it all and other times he only eats a little bit. I just dont want him to be overweight..lol |

I feed him INNOVA puppy food so I know he has one of the best foods a yorkie can have . . . . My only hope is that he does not weight more than 7 pounds as I carry him A LOT. :D :D Talk about obsession . . that is me with my Tiger. Not being with him all day is an ordeal so I just pick him up the minute I get home and cuddle him a LONG time. In fact, I just ordered a "pet pocket" carrier so he can be with me most of the time yet still have both hands free to do house chores. |
I wouldn't worry about the weight. They go through at least 1 growing spurt and then you'll notice that they'll slow down. |
I don't know how much you should give him. Shelby only has dry food and she eats about a fourth of a cup twice a day at 9 months. She is not much bigger than your little one. (she gets tiny pieces of treats, meat and veg. too)I make sure her food is available all day and at night if she hasn't finished it I put cooked vegetables on it and she gobbles it down. Occasionally I give her chicken on it but I don't want her becoming one of those dogs that wont eat dog food. she likes vegetables a lot! If you have the energy ;) you might want to try to sway pup away from eating wet food. maybe I am repeating info you know (sorry) but this breed has teeth issues so dry food is a better choice. I know how hard changing is but it will be easier now than later. good luck. |
