17 pound male Yorkie We have a very large male yorkie, 17 pounds. He is 16 months old and needs to go on a diet. We feed our male English Setter twice a day, need to feed our yorkie same time. We use Taste of the Wild dry dog food, how much should we be feeding our yorkie? |
Feed him as directed on the feeding guide that is printed on the bag. Feed him at the weight you want him to be, not the weight he is now. Cut out all treats unless they are water based raw veggies, such as carrot, cucumber, watermelon, etc. Small pieces only. |
I would also suggest having a vet examine his body frame and give you an estimate of what his ideal weight may be. And of course get him more active, as well. You'll generally want to be able to feel a little bit of rib and have more slender waistline (no sausage on sticks, like my girl at times lol). Also depending on how much he loses, he may have some slightly saggy skin, which should firm up overtime. |
Thanks for the advice, the dog food bag has been recycled and the Taste of the Wild web site doesn't give me the information. Hubby will stop at store and check out the bag for amount of food per weight. Will ask vet next time we bring him in. I felt his ribs and he doesn't feel fat, gets plenty of exercise too. I think he must just be a stocky yorkie, the gentlemen we purchased him from said he'd get to be about 12 pounds. But 17 pounds? Anybody else has Yorkies that weigh that much? |
My passed girl at full adult was 17 lbs, sleek body, no fat, she was just a big yorkie. She had to be put down at 17 y/o, I don't remember what her weight was at 16 months, but she was BIG as a puppy. |
Here's a feeding guideline, you didn't specify which of the 9 formulas that you use. Adult Dog Dry Food Sierra Mountain Canine Formula Taste of the Wild Pet Food |
Take an ideal weight he should be. If he's 17lbs and over weight you can start will 15lbs and see how much the food is in comparison to what you are feeding now. Go slow it will be easier, Its a start. Dog Food Calculator |
Feed twice a day s good. It doesn't matter. Just keep track of the food. ~ 1cup 3x a day is 1/3 cup each time. Twice is 1/2 cup each time. The food amount for the day is the same. If he likes organic baby carrots sometimes that keeps the hunger pains away. No matter what the good eaters are always hungry..or act like they are starving. |
Has your vet said he is overweight? |

That's a good point Taylor. I didn't think about that! |
He could just be large. I would get advice about that from the vet. I think treats are a big issue. Our vet said to think of a treat like a candy bar. |
I make all our dog treats with a little bit of venison and a recipe for very hard crunchy tartar reducing treats. They are cut to 1/2 inch square, very small. I hadn't thought of recalling the dog food, will save the bag from now on. |
