How old are yorkie puppies when they stop growing or gaining weight? I have two yorkie puppies; Duncan is 6 months old and Little Miss Elliot is 4 months old. Every time I take them to the vet they have gained even more weight. Duncan was 8.1 lbs at 4 months old and yesterday he was 10.1 lbs. (wow!) Little Miss Elliot was only 2 lbs when I got her and now she is 4.6 lbs! Duncan's parents were both 6 lbs. and Elliot's parents were also. Reading most of your posts on the forums, it seems as though your puppies are very small and barely weigh anything. I know a few of you have bigger yorkies and it seems as though Duncan is going to be a "teapot". Am I feeding them too much or are they just going to be big yorkies? They both are gaining 1/2 lb. every two weeks. About what age do they finally stop gaining weight or at least slow down? And when do they stop getting taller/longer? |
hi wigglewomyn, I really don't know when they stop growing. I too think my toodles will be a teapot. She is 12 weeks old and already weighs 4.2 lbs. Her mom was 5 pounds and dad 3. It is really funny how we get big babies from such little parents.. |
This is a great question!! I can't answer because my puppy is just 5 months old. She was tiny when I got her…just about 2 lbs..but grew and grew pretty quickly. She has a great appetite, certainly not fussy about food, lol. She's also long and tall, and last weighed 7 lbs about 2 weeks ago. I don't know her parents history,as she's a rescue so I'm just waiting to see how big she gets…she is not a teacup, lol…I love the teapot! Sunni barely looks like the puppy she was, now that she's getting older and bigger! |
They don't stop growing in length and height until about 8 months to a year. My Uni didn't fill out until about 2 years. So she was a lanky "teenager" until after 2 where she filling in to about 5.5 lbs. She's 8 now and has gained some weight now she's probably almost 7 lbs but she's tall. Your pups will most likely put on a few more. Duncan I think may reach 12 lbs, but anything over 7 lbs (which is the standard) is larger than standard. That's still tiny to me! But I think we lovingly use the term teapot for pups over 10 or 12 lbs. It's not a hard rule bc it's just a fun term. Eliott sounds like she might be her parents' size or maybe a pound or two more. Did you see both their parents? I ask this bc when I was shown a pic of Uni's mom, it totally wasn't her mom, just a random picture (now I've come to realize) bc Uni is from a broker :( If you bought your pups from a website or from a random person with an ad and the parents' weren't there, it could have been not the truth they told you. Either way, don't feed less. They are predisposed to be the size they are supposed to be. If you underfeed you will just make them weak and malnourished. Plus with holding food is cruel. You will love them no matter what their size I'm sure! |
Lola grew a lot in length between her first and second birthday, I didn't realize how much until I put one of her springy outfits on her and it looks too short. |
My girl is a little over 10 months and will be 11 months near the end of this month. She's last weighed at 11.2 lbs, but even the vet and I agree that she's a little bit of a chunky monkey (she was fed alot X_x). Since she's got LP, she's needing to lose just a couple more pounds so her perfect weight should be around 8-9 lbs. I'm noticing she's been firming up more and has a little loose skin, so I'm guessing it could have more to do with muscle weight as well, but I still feel a good layer of fat on her ribs. She's also pretty tall and long bodied, but she's dainty framed and structured. Her mom was around 8lbs and her dad at 5lbs (saw them both, the momma was a little weary of me and the daddy was a little spitfire). So it's like she's got her dad's daintiness and her mom's size and length X.x lol I wouldn't call her frame large, just long (as a human, she'd be tall and slender). She's also been fixed once she was a little over 6 months old and the vet said that she might grow a little bit longer framed because of that, but it varies for each dog (also doesn't help it made her gain weight easier :p). On one hand, I'm glad she didn't turn out to be a tiny dog, I'd be stressing over her more. I've debated at one point of getting her hormonal therapy after being spayed, but the vet assured me that even if she does grow longer framed than her original normal self would have, it wouldn't be by too much terribly much. So far she seems to be stabilizing in her frame and is starting to fill out more. I believe her being inactive and gained weight after recovering from being spayed had much to do with her LP condition (or making it worse) as she started to have leg issues a little after surgery. My past two yorkies also seemed to level out at around one year, as well. So I'd say one year, give or take, is a good average for body frame. For their hair color to mature, it may take a bit longer (anywhere from 1-3 years, depending on how fast it generally grows). And based on weight gain, again it's depending on if they are fixed or not (of course, current diet/exercise is a big factor, too). Our male was never fixed and he was muscular and never had weight issues. Our past female was fixed and was a bit chunky, but she and our male have been kept exercised, so she was fairly stable. I am more vigilant with my little Kimchi's weight because her current condition demands it (that and I don't want her to get too fat, anyways). |
My experience - Height and length no less than nine months, no more than a year, but that second year they fill out and gain about 15% more than their one year old weight. |
Has the vet mentioned weight. Dinky weighs 4.5 at 5 years old, so he is a little guy. the vet says he will be leaner at 4 lbs and is encouraging this. He used to be 4.11. It's been a year, but we are slowly getting him there. |
Willow is our first yorkie so I didn't have any idea how big she would get, her parents were both under 5 lbs. We had an appointment to get her spayed but she ended up going into heat and we had to wait 4 more months, she just was spayed on Tuesday and she weighs 12 lbs and turned one year old the last of February. I love my big girl, I don't worry as much when we have company over because she is not dainty. We feed her Royal Canin since she was tiny and I would rather her be exactly as she is :) |
I wondered if I was feeding them too much since they are both gaining 1/2 lb every month. It seemed strange to me. Neither of them seem overweight. Duncan just feels solid. I always thought yorkies were small dogs until I got Duncan and he started adding on the pounds. I love him as he is and wouldn't trade him for the world. He is my loveabug. I hadn't even realized that Duncan had gained any weight until he was weighed at the vets last night. He doesn't seem any heavier than he was two months ago. I was curious about when they stop growing. |
Don't worry. Just like if you have kids (I don't) wouldn't you want to see them grow as big and tall as they could? I guess you wouldn't want them fat though LOL. But yours aren't. They will continue to "fill out" until about 2 years. |
We have to keep in mind that even if we do see both parents that doesn't tell the whole story. We get a mix of DNA and some of it can come from far back on the strand. So if there was even one large dog in the the history it could show up at some point. Thats whats so cool each puppy comes with there own little surprises. : ) |
like others have said about 9 months to a year, it's one of the reasons I don't get a puppy until they are about 4 months of age, because it is so hard to tell until at least that time what their adult weight will be, and even then you can not be 100% sure. You cannot go by just the parents size, it goes back more generations than that. Two people I know in one of my yorkie groups mated their pups, the male is a tiny parti extremely cute and just about 4 lbs the girl just about 5 lbs. The litter of 5 is all over the place in weight two of the males at 4 months old are 8 & 10 lbs one of the girls is about 6 and another one of the girls is not quite 3 lbs. Now the gal with the mom dog is pissed because she has since found out that the male dog she mated her female with is known to "throw" big puppies even though he is tiny and so were his litter mates. I was curious so I checked with someone I knew that bought two pups that came from the male and sure enough at age two the male is almost 9 lbs and the female 5 lbs . But some people like the bigger ones, the gal that has the two pups said I prefer my male's size, my female just seems so tiny and delicate. So it shows you different people like different size yorkies. |
