Puppy alone Well it's been two weeks since our Ruger puppy has been home and I haven left him along yet. Should 2 - 4 hours every other day be ok? Don't want to stress him out too much. |
Perfectly fine. |
It will be fine, actually it is probably good for him because you don't want your puppy to develop separation anxiety. |
Max has been with us for about 6 weeks now. He doesn't mind being aone but hates being confined to his room. I think alone time is actually good for him. |
I started out by giving them treats and saying "bye bye~" when I leave the house. The pro is that they don't mind me leaving b/c they get a treat and they know I'm coming back. Con... if I forget to say "bye bye" they get upset. :( Mom said Magnus laid by the door whining for over an hour after I left. Would come even when offered a treat. |
IME best thing to do is leave. Don't make a fuss or anything. I do leave a kong with peanut butter to keep them busy. Just enough for taste. I don't say by. When I come home I don't acknowledge them for the first few minutes. I don't make it exciting or a party out of it. IME thats what gives them anxiety. Its trained. They act like they think you want them. = Excited to see you. I was a web cam. Mine just sleep while I'm gone. You can get a webcam for your phone to watch them from Dlink. |
I agree, it's good to leave him alone every so often other wise he may develop separation anxiety. |
It is very good to leave them alone some. I crate mine because he gets into stuff when I am gone and if I crate him I know he is not destroying things. He is really good when I am home, but left alone he gets into trouble. I just put him in his crate and tell him I will be back in a few minutes and leave. He is very good and then when I come home he squeals because he is happy to see me, but that is okay. I let him out of his crate and he says hi to me and then everything is right back to the way it was before I left. I would start leaving the puppy alone for 10 minutes a couple times a day, then 20 minutes and then 30 minutes. Then leave it for an hour. Make sure it has toys or things to chew on. I think I actually have worse separation anxiety than the dog does to be honest. He is just always happy to see me and it doesn't matter if I ran up to the school to drop something off and am gone 10 minutes or if I had to work a 1/2 a day and was gone 4 hours, he is just as happy to see me. It is really cute actually. Good luck! |
Thanks Thanks to all your replies. He will have an open crate inside an x pen with toys water and food. He has stayed in his pen for an hour or so with me being around. I know I will be more stressed than him. He's just a baby and I hate to hear or think about a baby crying. |
Babies sleep so much no doubt he nods off pretty soon after you leave. And confining them is safe for a baby, also eventually teaches them to hold their waste until they are released from confinement and taken to the appropriate potty area. As others suggested, leaving her with things to chew on and play with, kong toys stuffed with kibble and such, will help her keep busy until she tires and sleeps again, wakes and plays some more, sleeps, etc. Most healthy dogs quickly learn how to accept and adapt to staying alone, eventually coming to learn that their human packmate always returns to them after a while and their easiest way of coping with our absence is just to mostly sleep while we're gone. |
