Tantrums Penny is my first Yorkie. She is going to be 2 in July as near as we can figure. Twice when we were outside and she wanted something (A pine cone once and a big beetle the next) she stands up, strains against her leash and pitches a hissy fit. She reminds me of a lot of children throwing tantrums in stores. I actually think it's kinda funny but I was curious if this is a common act. I have learned from being on this forum that she is pretty typical in just about everything. I am hoping that this is another ok it's a Yorkie thing. |
Neither of mine have ever did that I bet it's cute to see |
When Ally was around a year old, I was holding her outside my neighbor's house. My other neighbor was having a yard sale, so there were a lot of people driving by. Well, Ally saw a squirrel and went CRAZY! I couldn't let her down because of the traffic. She loves loves loves loves to chase squirrels. I can't express how much she loves to chase them. She has even climbed a tree to get to one! Well, she starting screaming at the top of her lungs. She wanted that squirrel! Someone stopped their car and wanted to know what I was doing to my puppy! They thought I was hurting her. They were going to take her away from me because they feared for her safety! lol I had to explain her love/hate of squirrels. She is now six years old and still loves her squirrels. |
Lola has regular temper tantrums when I leave without her, it's hilarious, and I swear my laughing gets her madder. |
My girls used to pitch a fit when I left the house. I now give them a treat. It's sad, but I think they're happy I leave now! lol I cannot, however, come back inside if I've forgotten something. It only works one time! lol It really does work though. |
It's a yorkie thing lol, anyway for me it is. Cody is my 5th and throws temper tantrums when he can't get his own way, my passed 4 girls were the same way. I think it's because we just spoil them to much lol. |
My Molli does this too. If she doesn't get to go where she wants on a walk she lays flat and refuses to move. The other day she wanted to cross the street to say hi to another dog, I said no and she laid down and would not get up, I had to carry her back inside! Terrier was derived from terror I think ;) |

From now on when Dinky has his "outburst" when he sees the neighbor and dog walk by, I am going to think of it as a tantrum! |

At age 4-ish, he once so embarrassed me at the vet whining and screaming and scratching to get out of his carrier to a little Maltese whose mommy sat down next to us. I could not get him to listen to me at all so I took him out of his carrier, when he than began to bark and whine and lunge toward the little dog. He was out of control! I got him out front alone and just stood there and held him up in front of me, eye to eye and just stared at him for a while - NOT smiling. He finally looked away. I put him down and got him to "Watch me" for a while, which re-focused him on me, as I held up what I pretended was food I'd taken out of my mouth and still, when we went back inside and sat down, he whined from time to time in pure agony he wanted that dog so bad. It wasn't until they took the little white dog in that he finally let it go. I chalked it up to his feeling bum at the time and being on Cerenia and he wasn't as well-trained as he is now but that's the only time he's just gone totally bonkers other than when I first got him and he was so totally wild. |
Hissy Fits I have never laughed so much at all your silly Yorkie's antics. Especially the one who wanted the squirrel so much that she carried on and screamed and made passers by think you were treating her badly. And then just laying down and refusing to move because they could not get their way. Too funny !! Never thought of Joey pitching a hissy fit before but that is exactly what he does when I leave the house and when I come home. He is put in his pen when I go out and he screams and screams and carries on something so loud at his protest that I am leaving and jumps and jumps and then bites at the pen when I don't let him out of his pen as soon as I get home. He is almost funny except it upsets me the way he carries on. |
Axel has many tantrums daily, when he isn't getting his way. If I sleep too long he whines. When he is being brushing he freaks out wiggling, whine, and biting the comb. Heaven forbid he sees another dog he can't go greet, he becomes a gremlin! My favorite is when he fusses. If he is getting into something he isn't supposed to I point my finger at him with a stern "No" and he barks and rrr's at me. Like he is fussing at me because he got caught doing something bad. Sakura is an angel compared to my little tantrum throwing devil man. |
My Yorkies are pretty good at not throwing too many tantrums, but I used to have a male toy poodle named Wizard that had a mind of his own and you always were made aware of it. Wizard was very smart and was able to complete many commands......when he wanted. However, when Wizard did not want to comply he would hang his head down low and begin to make the weirdest sound. We always referred to it as him cussing us out.....it was a low guttural sound that he would make as he would exit off into his kennel. That meant, no go..I'm done...shows over. When Wizard was done, he was totally done, he told you, put his head down, cursed you and left the room. |
I'd say my little Kimchi is the only yorkie I've ever had that throws tantrums. She's very verbal about her displeasure, discomfort or wanting something. But most of the time she seems to throw a tantrum whenever our jack russell, Chloe, comes in from being let out to do her business (we're guessing she's jealous and wanted to go out too). She'll also throw a tantrum if she on my bed when Chloe comes into the room, especially while she's getting her pampering/attention, as she wants her out of the room. If she doesn't leave the room, she'll starting doing something like a cross between an angry and crying bark. |
