It is a serous issue. Many pet owners cannot pay the hundreds of dollars that it costs to rehydrate their pets. Many pets never even see a vet after their initial shots. Many times when we take our pets out in public they are mixing with dogs that have had little healthcare. Since a dog's nose is always close to the ground they can pick up illnesses from dogs that are no longer in the immediate area. I hope someone is looking into what is causing this problem and how to treat it properly. |
I'm in chicago, and it's really serious. I work in a pharmacy and we've seen an increase in medications for dogs. When you have vets writing a controlled prescription for a pet, then there's an issue. There is starting to be a shortage of the cough syrup, and it's making things worse. It's just horrible, and I'm now anxious about my luna. I plan on traveling at the end of the month, and I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to board her or not. One of my boss's dogs got it, and she was vaccinated against it. Luckily, Luna has a vet appointment tomorrow morning, so I'll ask them what exactly is going on. |

And the dog boarding, grooming, and day care facilities are becoming more cautious...as they should. I called a place close by me to request a temperament test, which is required before I can board luna, and they told me that they are not scheduling any tests as of now. One of the dogs they had started displaying symptoms of kennel cough, so no pet is allowed until the 21st or until they receive a positive or negative result from the dog's vet. He said that this is the policy at all facilities that cater to dogs through out chicago. I'm trying not to freak myself out... |
From what I understand 20% of those that get the flu will get more severe symptoms of fever and pneumonia. I think it's the pneumonia that has caused the deaths. This flu virus started as an equine flu virus and around 2004 jumped to species to dogs. There is a test for the flu and treatment is supportive. I also read that the Indiana Veterinary Assn was recommending dog owners visiting Chicago to not take their dogs with them. I think to try to keep this contained. I had Pepper vaccinated because he goes regularly to a groomer. The shots are about $25 each and it takes two for an adult. Puppies may take 3. |
I am in the Detroit area and the outbreak in Chicago was was a story on the radio 2 days ago. They recommended not taking your pet to the Chicago as they said there were at 1100 reported cases of this flu in Chicago. If there is 110 reported (they went to the vet), you know there is 2 - 3 times that many not reported. |

A couple of years ago, one of the two places where we board sent out an email to all clients to let them know that they had a new requirement -- the canine influenza vaccine. Then, perhaps a week later, we got a letter from our vet saying that if we wanted to drop off our dogs for any reason (boarding, grooming, etc), the vaccine was required. |
Beware! It's in the Houston area now: Deadly dog flu is found in Texas - Houston Chronicle |
Well crap. We already have an outbreak of rabies cases in my area of Central Texas. |
I just heard the virus made the jump to cats. |

Coles mommy- I feel awful about that being in your area! I can't imagine walks sound like a fun idea right now :( |
I'll have to google it. I hear it on TV as part of the news tease. It is a little scary but I have gotten my baby vaccinated. More worried about going to the groomer than walks. |
