New owner of baby yorkie
 

Hello I need some advise. I will be a working owner of a new baby yorkie. Not sure if this is a good thing or not. Im lonely since giving my last dog away. Which i rescued and raised till he became to big for me to handle. He lived inside was kennel trained a very good dog. I loved him but could no longer handle him He was a boxer lab mix. Looked more like a lab black with a small v of white on his chest. I miss him! :cry:

Please get the book "Yorkies For Dummies".....you really need to read this book if you have never had a small dog and especially a Yorkie. There is a ton of valuable information in this book, information you will need for years to come! What made you decide a Yorkie was the breed for you!

Not sure if i should take offence or be happy you gave the info. hahahaha I really do need to know what and how to do things but i figure my sister which has had yorkies for yrs will be helping me. thank you

Don't be offended, lol. I think that book is recommended to just about all new to Yorkie owners. I never had a Yorkie before either, but I've had small dogs, Shih Tzus, so I am at least familiar with the grooming required, the nutritional needs though they are a bit different with Yorkies. I didn't realized for instance that when very young, Yorkie puppies need to eat a little bit frequently because they can develop hypoglycemia which can be extremely serious. They also need a significant amount of attention in the early weeks. They have tiny bladders and some say 2 hours, but Sunni seemed like she had to pee every hour….potty training needs to be very consistent. I have a job that allows me to work from home a lot, and schedule appointments to suit my schedule. That allowed me to be around to let her go potty on her pads. I got her in the middle of this crazy cold winter, so going out wasn't really the greatest idea when she was only 2 lbs. Anyway, I've had my share of bigger dogs too..Golden Retreivers and English Setters. I found it was much easier to potty train and crate them, then it is for the little ones. I have an xpen for my Yorkie instead of a crate, which I tried for 2 or 3 days…just didn't work at all. The xpen is like a little playpen, so she's got more room and if I need to scoop her up to keep her out of trouble, its easy to put her into it….with the flap open she goes in on her own now..I have her toy box and cozy bed in there. Just some tips I've learned in the last few months. My puppy is 5 mos. + 2 days old :) Good luck. They are tons of fun, full of love and energy!

I would be willing to bet there is a lot of information even your sister who has "had Yorkies for years", would benefit from. It is a wonderful book and offers an excellent opportunity to learn to even the most experienced of us.....none of us know everything, even those of us that have been doing this for over 35 years.....when you think you have nothing to learn from reading an excellent book, that puppy will make you scream "UNCLE"!!!!

Another thing I would strongly suggest is that you look into getting pet insurance. There are lots of medical issues that are prevalent in yorkies and the vet bills can be extremely high!! If I had it to do over, I would have insured each of mine as they came to me.

The common list of problems that are prevalent in the breed: pancreatitis, luxating patellas, cruciate ligament tears, IBD ... just to name a few. Not one of them is inexpensive to deal with. Oh, and keep in mind that most yorkies need yearly dentals....so prepare yourself for that. Most of this stuff you will find all over this forum.

Welcome to YT, read,read, read about the breed. Having someone in the family with a yorkie is beneficial. But having your own knowledge is crucial.

Welcome to YT :)!! You will love being a yorkie owner, but def read around and learn bc there is a lot to know about this breed.

I would suggest looking into getting a puppy playpen. There are various kinds on the market but basically you have enough room for a bed a feeding area and a puppy pad that is placed inside a secure frame so the puppy can't play with it while you are gone. This way the pup will learn to use the potty and have enough room to move around. Later you can teach your pup to potty outside but for a baby this is probably your best option since you will be away during the day.
